Nami Kaneko: “Japan is far, but with Uribe’s novel we see that we share the same world”

Kirmen Uribe and translator Nami Kaneko in Tokyo at one of the readings Nami Kaneko, from Japan, translated the novel Bilbao-New York-Bilbao by Kirmen Uribe into Japanese, and did so directly from Euskera. She says that Bernardo Atxaga’s novel Obabakoak inspired her to learn Basque eight years ago. When she read the latest work by Uribe she thought that the Japanese would identify with it and so she began to translate it. “We also have a culture that is closely tied to the sea, and in our world many old words are being lost, our grandparents lived through war…The Japanese readers don’t know very much about Euskal Herria but after reading the book they will feel closer.”

Writers Harkaitz Cano and Mikel Ayerbe will participate in the Guadalajara Book Fair in Mexico

Harkaitz Cano, Mari Jose Olaziregi, Aizpea Goenaga and Mikel Ayerbe at the presentation (photo Etxepare) Starting this Saturday, a large group from the Basque literary and publishing world will be at the Guadalajara Book Fair, thanks to the Euskal Editoreen Elkartea (The Association of Basque Language Editors) and the Etxepare Basque Institute. Harkaitz Cano and literary expert Mikel Ayerbe will also participate along with these two entities, present their latest works: the novel Twist and a collection of short stories Our Wars: Short Fiction on Basque Conflict respectively. On December 1, both authors will be in Mexico City where they will give talks at the UNAM (Autonomous University of Mexico) and the IberoAmerican University of Mexico City, as part of the Basque Culture and Language lectureships sponsored by the Etxepare Institute.

Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea creates an original campaign to announce their Basque language classes

One of the campaign posters (photo IZiarreta) At the beginning of the semester, in September, in the present serious economic crisis the forecast for enrollment were very pessimistic, but Barcelona’s Basque club, far from being intimidated or to remain idle, decided to take the bull by the horns to maintain the number of students. How? By a special marketing campaign based on the striking images by photographer and graphic designer Igotz Ziarreta. The response was very good and the club has now made those images available to other Basque clubs in case others would like to launch a similar campaign.

Iñaki Etxepare, cellist from Irun begins a tour tomorrow through Chile, Argentina and Brazil

Iñaki Etxepare will give Master classes as well as perform in Buenos Aires on November 26 A South American tour by the Basque musician will begin this Wednesday that will provide both educational and artistic offerings. Throughout his tour Iñaki Etxepare will present his book Pedagogy of the Cello and will perform Bach and the Sea and in some cases, in activities organized by Basque clubs in the cities he will visit. The tour will begin on November 21 at the Euzko Etxea in Santiago Chile and will conclude on December 2, in Puerto Alegre, Brazil. During his time in Argentina, he will perform in Mendoza (TBA), San Juan and Buenos Aires.

EuskalKultura.com is a finalist for Diario Vasco´s best webpage of the year related to euskara

EuskalKultura.com among the other finalists of the DiarioVasco.com awards EuskalKultura.com is part of a selected group of finalists for a prize given out next week by Diario Vasco, a Gipuzkoan newspaper that gives out annual prizes in various categories to the best webpages in the region. Their objective is to "promote internet media" and "recognize the quality of work and effort of those who create using this medium." This will the seventh year of awarding these prizes and EuskalKultura.com is one of the three web finalists competing for the award that recognizes the best use and promotion of the Basque language.

Bordeaux’s Basque club presents “Aita eta Ama Maiteak”, a show about emigration to Argentina

From left to right musicians, Jean Christian Galtxetaburu, Cecile Tison and Mixel Etxekopar Musicians Mixel Etxekopar, Cecile Tison and Jean Christian Galtxetaburu will be at Bordeaux’s Basque club on November 25 to perform a poetic-musical show called “Aita eta ama Maiteak” (Dear Mom and Dad). The title includes the opening lines of many letters that were sent by Basque emigrants to Argentina. During the concert there will be various readings of these letters, written in the XIX century, while the musicians accompany the narration of the joys and pains of those who emigrated with music and poetry.

The Brotherhood of the Virgin of Arantzazu retrieves historical archives on the 400th anniversary of its foundation

Historians and researchers behind the revival of the Brotherhood of the Virgin Arantzazu during the planting of a sapling from the Tree of Gernika in Lima (photo JBazan) On November 6 commemorative events were celebrated in Lima to mark the four hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Brotherhood of the Virgin of Arantzazu, that has been revived by a group of euskaltzales there after years in oblivion. The anniversary events served to publicize the extensive process of research and retrieval of historical documents of the brotherhood which has already begun to bear fruit. The revived brotherhood is working to digitize these documents and has already reissued texts of the Novena to the Virgin of Arantzazu in Lima in Basque and the statutes of the Brotherhood originally published for the last time in 1851.

A Basque class has been launched in Milan with the help of the ACE Roma and UPTER

Lucia Ezker teaching Basque in Milan Last Thursday Lucia Ezker, a teacher from Pamplona, gave her first Basque class that just began in Milan with the collaboration of the Associazione Culturale Euskara (ACE) and Università Popolare di Roma (UPTER). The class was prompted by a number of euskaltzales in Milan that had had the idea for some time, but thought it was something “utopic,” according Lucia. “When we published the announcement for the class, so many interested people responded that we decided that we had to do it,” she said.

Children of Bahia Blanca, Pringles and Tres Arroyos participated in the Txikis gathering at Union Vasca

Children from Bahia Blanca and Union Vasca with their aids (photo EE) The idea for having a regional children’s gathering in southern Argentina in the city of Bahia Blanca was born in 2009. After the first edition of the activity, and excited by how successful it was, the experience was repeated in2010, adding the Macachin, Laprida and Cnel. Pringles Basque clubs. Now, in 2012, as in prior years, the event gathered children, relatives and companions to enjoy a day basking in Basque culture. “The result was 100% positive and we hope to repeat it next year inviting all the children in the area,” Romina Larrañaga told EuskalKultura.com, as one of the children’s instructors from Bahia Blanca.
