The Basque Government’s Department of Basque Citizens and Communities Abroad has advanced the information for the 2013 grant period for Basque clubs. The official publication of the resolution will be in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country on December 21 (EHAA-BOPV) and will then enter into force. However, for those clubs and entities that would like to get started on their grant applications, the text of the resolution is also provided online at: Euskadi.net/euskaldunak and on the Euskaletxeak.net website. The application deadline is February 28 according to the Directorate.

On Saturday night the Euskal Etxea of New York was converted into a nightclub to celebrate its first Gayaldi. Not even the bad weather, it rained all night long, nor the cancelation of subway service that goes to the Basque club made a dent in the dozens of people who went to the Basque club to attend the first Gayaldi. Many made their way to the Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn not wanting to miss this historic event in the life of the New York Basque club. The DJ Ron Like Hell, go-go boys Rowan and David, that didn’t stop dancing all night long, added a festive note to an unforgettable evening that will be continued in future editions.

Eva M. Wheeler won the photo contest, “Etxepare Munduan” organized by the Etxepare Basque Institute. Eva is studying Basque culture and language at the University of California Santa Barbara and thanks to her photo, she one an intensive Basque course in the Basque Country this summer. Her professors were also awarded the possibility to travel to the Basque Country as well. Congratulations!

The Lima, Peru Basque club filled with members and friends to celebrate the International Day of Euskera on December 3, as well as the feast of San Francisco Javier. Raul Noblecilla, club president, recalled that the Euskera Day festivities coincide with that of one of the most universal Basques, the Basque saint who traveled to missions in India, Malaysia, Japan and China. The Basque-Peruvian festivities included a performance by the club’s choir and ended with a dinner attended by many.

The Complutense University in Madrid held a conference on the multilingualism on the Iberian Peninsula on November 28 and 29, organized by its Department of Euskera. The ten talks that comprised the program were very well received by the students who attended in large numbers. Among the presentations the ones dedicated to Euskera by professors Karlos Cid Abasolo and Arantzazu Fernadez Iglesias deserve special mention.

The Etxepare Basque Institute has published the photos in its “Etxepare Munduan” contest online and now everyone is invited to choose their favorites. The photographers are students in the various Basque Language and Culture lectureships supported by Etxepare in more than 15 countries. The winning student will win the possibility of doing an intensive Basque language course in the Basque Country.

The atmosphere in the street is icy, in regards to the temperature as well as in regards to the cuts and attacks that the Basque culture is enduring. In order to deal with this, Basque writers, musicians, editors and euskaltzales from all over Euskal Herria are gathering in the warmth of the Durangoko Azoka, from tomorrow through Sunday. As in prior editions the Diaspora will also have spot among the stands at the fair, for example, Maiatz publisher that published Urruneko Mendebaldean Artzain, the memories of Basque-American Mattin Etchamendy.

Donostia’s City Hall, along with the Mara Mara Hizkuntza Zerbitzuak Company have launched a website to help to practice Basque during a presentation yesterday as part of the International Day of Euskera events. The site is called Mintzanet.ent and its goal is to put Basque speakers who would like to practice in touch with each other. The system is simple; you have to register on the site and then it will put you in touch with other participants that you can talk to using Skype. It is a new way to practice Basque while making friends all over the world.

HABE recently closed the call for assistance for Basque classes at the club level and has announced that during the 2012-2013 school year that classes will be given in a total of 75 Basque clubs worlwide. This translates into more than 22,000 teaching hours to nearly 2,000 adult students to which another 1,000 kids could be added. HABE has budged 230,000 Euros for Basque classes as part of its Euskara Munduan program. It is worth mentioning as well that another club joined this year: the Zazpiak Bat Basque Society in Vancouver, Canada.
