The London Basque Society has organized children’s playgroup in Basque as of January

Poster announcing the London Basque Society's Euskal Playgroup London’s Euskal Etxea will begin the year with a new project: creating the “Euskal Playgroup,” a group of games for children where members children can get together, play and relate to others their age in Basque. The idea came from the parents themselves and will begin in January. Anyone who would like their children to participate should contact the London Basque Society.

John Ysursa will step down as NABO’s facilitator on January 1 when Kate Camino will take his place

John Ysursa, Kate Camino and Lisa Corcostegui (photos EuskalKultura.com) Coinciding with the beginning of 2013, John Ysursa, NABO’s facilitator will leave this post after seven years of service to the organization. Kate Camino will then take his place, assisted by Lisa Corcostegui on the website. Ysursa will continue his work in NABO as chair of the Education Committee, as well as through the Chino Basque club where he serves as its secretary. His replacement, Kate Camino, has a long history in NABO as well as in the Basque-American community, and will share the post’s responsibilities with Lisa Corcostegui who will serve as the organization’s new webmaster.

Rosario’s Zazpirak Bat club's farewell to its centennial year with the Olentzero and best wishes for 2013

Images of the end of year party (photo EE) The Zazpirak Bat Basque club in Rosario said goodbye to a year that will remain in the memories of its members. The event was a success as described from the club, “The hall was filled. Just as all the events this year, once again the Zazpi seemed small.” Even Olentzero didn’t want to miss the party and so he appeared after dinner with his bag in his hand, to the delight of those in attendance. At the moment of the toast, club president, Enrique Otaño, encouraged all there to raise their glasses and to continue to work for the euskal etxea as they have done so far.

Award winning Basque chef Elena Arzak will open the Ametsa restaurant in the center of London

Elena Arzak (photo J. Lastras) Basque haute cuisine will come to London thanks to Elena Arzak. The daughter of the famous chef from Donosti, Juan Mari Arzak, will open a restaurant in the five-star hotel Halkin, in the most prestigious neighborhood in the center of the city. The restaurant is called Ametsa which means dream in Basque.

The book “Fatherland and Freedom” analyzes the Basque presence in the wars for independence in Cuba

The cover of Fatherland and Freedom published by Txalaparta The historian alexander Ugalde coordinated the book Fatherland and Freedom, a study of Basque participation in the Wars of Independence of Cuba (1868-1898). In the work, four authors – two Basques, two Cubans – gather the results of their research on the Basque presence in Cuba in the 19th century, their participation in the wars and the reaction in Euskal Herria to the happenings on the other side of the Atlantic.

Shanghai's Euskal Etxea will award its Golden Abacus 2011 to Bilbao’s town hall

Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum (photo Wojtek Gurak) The Euskal Etxea of Shanghai will award the Bizkaian capital its Golden Abacus 2011 to Bilbao’s town hall for its successful presence at the International Exposition of Shanghai 2010. The Golden Abacus is awarded by the Chinese-Basque organization to individuals or institutions that are distinguished by their contribution the diffusion of the Basque cultural tradition in Asia.

The Jo Maris fund offers more than 300 scores of Basque songs on the EKE website

Musician and harmonizer Joseph Maris The Basque Cultural Institute of Iparralde (Euskal Kultur Erakundea/EKE) has published an archive of musical scores by composer and harmonizer Joseph Maris, on its website, including more than 300 pieces. Most belong to the traditional and contemporary Basque Music Fund. Scores can be downloaded in PDF, Midi, or Sibelius format and are available for anyone who wants to use them.

The Kotoiaren Lurra Basque club in Chaco recovers the Erakin magazine that has now reached issue 11

The cover of Erakin #11 Coinciding with the end of the year, from North Eastern Argentina, the Kotoiaren Lurra Basque club in Chaco communicates the publication of issue 11 of Erakin, published in paper and dealing with various topics on current Basque history and culture, in Europe as well as in Chaco and Argentina. The new issue has maintained the format of its predecessors and commemorates the 500 anniversary of the conquest of the Kingdom of Navarre on its cover, and includes an article on the subject authored by Cesar Arrondo.

In Euskal Herria these songs are very well known and children learn them at a young age, caroling in the streets. In the Diaspora, however, some are less known and not everyone knows the lyrics.
