Mixel Etxekopar, renewing the pastoral: “What is tradition, a box that is full but closed, or a path that is created by walking?”

Last year's pastoral that told the story of Jose Mendiague (photo EKE) A group of creators and young Xiberuan singers have begun to prepare a new pastoral that will be performed in March in the town of Gotaine. The sneak-peak (Mustraka) will be performed in Urdiñarbe. The pastoral will tell the story of gypsies in the Basque Country, performed by a group of 14 young singers. The author of the work is musician Mixel Etxekopar who spoke to EuskalKultura.com about the necessity to renew the pastorals and include youth: “Youth try to get involved and participate in new things. That is why we always ask ourselves, ‘What is transmission?’ ‘What can we change and what can’t we?’”

The University of Navarre begins a cycle of talks today on Basque emigration to America

Historian Oscar Alvarez Gila (UPV/EHU) will inaugurate the cycle of talks (photo EuskalKultura.com) Basque emigration to America will be the central theme during a cycle of talks organized by the Chair of Basque Language and Culture at the University of Navarre that begins today. Historian Oscar Alvarez Gila, professor at the University of the Basque Country who specializes in the Basque Diaspora will be charged with opening the cycle with his talk, “The Legal Framework of Overseas Emigration: Rethinking Basque Migration.” This year the Chair celebrates its fiftieth year dedicated to the diffusion, instruction and research of Basque culture.

Puerto Madryn’s Basque club takes a look back at 2012, in which it celebrated its first anniversary

Etorritakoengatik Basque club celebrated its first anniversary with a lunch in March (photo EE) The Etorritakoengatik Basque club in Puerto Madryn, in the Argentinean Patagonia, is beginning 2013 happily after meeting the goals set for its first year of existence. The club celebrated its first anniversary in March 2012, and during the last few months has dedicated itself into growing and strengthening its dance group as well as to the dissemination of the Basque culture. Its president, Nicolas Fagoaga, summarized the 2012 activities.

The work, written by Mark and John Bieter, prominent members of Idaho’s Basque community, is a fascinating journey through the history of the Basque in this state, from the arrival of the first sheepherders to today, becoming one of the most characteristic ethnic groups in the area.

Etxepare and the University of the Basque Country organize online courses to teach Basque abroad

2012 Excellence in Basque Studies class Anyone wanting to teach Basque language and Basque culture now have the opportunity to take a preparatory course online, thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the University of the Basque Country’s summer course program. The course is called “Training Course to Teach Euskera and Basque Culture at Foreign Universities. Excellence in Basque Studies (II)” and runs for five weeks. The deadline to enroll is January 31 and spots are limited.

A new Basque club in Brazil brings together Basques from the state of Rio Grande do Sul

Club president, Ana Luiza Etchalus (left) with other members posing with a club t-shirt (photo RioGrandeSulEE) Having only been active for just over a year, the Euskal Etxea in Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil has managed to bring together a group of approximately 200 people from this area interested in the Basque culture. This part of Brazil that borders Uruguay and Argentina is the state with the largest concentration of Basques in the country. Among its plans for 2013 the club has set as a goal locating and recuperating historic archives of Basque families in the area.

Application period now open for those needing emergency assistance from the Basque Government

The Basque Government Lehendakaritza headquarters in Vitoria-Gasteiz The Basque Government published the call for economic aid to Basque clubs in order to aid members living in Basque communities abroad with healthcare or those in extreme situations of need in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country last Friday, December 28. The total budget is 202,000 Euros and the deadline to apply is February 28.
