A photo from the "Euskal Herria in Winter" series (Kepa Etchandy) We are experiencing the most raw of winters in Euskal Herria: rain, gusty winds, floods, snow storms as well as storms at sea…The photographer Kepa Etchandy decided to take advantage of nature’s show and has included a series entitled, “Euskal Herria in Winter” on his website: www.ibaifoto.com. The series gathers nearly 50,000 images of the Basque Country.

ACE and UPTER are spreading Basque culture in Roma: Sarrionandia in Italia, Basque radio…

Poster advertising Wednesday's "Aperitivo Basco" The Associazione Culturale Euskara and the Department of Basque Language and Culture at the UPTER University in Rome continue introducing the Basque culture in the Italian capital. The day after tomorrow they are offering a poetry reading by writer Joseba Sarrionandia translated into Italian as part of the “Aperitivo Basco” (Basque aperitif) that they celebrate every month at the bookstore/café Giufa. Additionally as part of this project of dissemination, both entities have published online the results of the Radiodramma project.

Aisa, is a new free online course to learn Basque in an enjoyable way, thanks to HABE

Elena and Vasile, two of the characters in this method Among the Basque courses available online that we presented recently, one that particularly struck us was HABE’s Aisa program. It is free and anyone can use it from anywhere in the world via the internet; the bad news is that right now it is only for Spanish speakers, for the moment. It begins at a very basic level and is a gateway to elementary Basque, and as its name indicates, Aisa is easy. Here we explain how to sign up and start the course.

Barcelona Basque club’s Zinemaldia grows up and is now in theaters

Poster advertising Zinemaldia 13 by Igotz Ziarreta For another year the Zinemaldia (Film Festival) at Barcelona’s Basque club is showing the Catalan capital a large selection of the most recent Basque films from February 1-28. The film festival is celebrating its 13th edition this year, and as a sign of its success is taking a new step, screening the documentary “Gazta zati bat” in theaters. The festival includes animation, drama, comedy, shorts and documentaries and will also be attended by actors and directors to present their works to the public.

The Azkue Foundation offers a series of online games to practice and learn Basque

EuskalPlay website to practice and learn Basque The Azkue Foundation has presented a new initiative this month to disseminate and promote the Basque language through the Internet. It is called EuskalPlay, and is a platform that provides a series of games to practice and learn Basque. There are nine games in all, each using a different didactic objective: learning words from different dialects, find synonyms, find the origins of Basque words, proverbs, get to know the history of dialects or work with vocabulary from different areas…

Basque, drums and an unbeatable atmosphere at the first barnetegi of the 2013-2016 cycle of Euskara Munduan

Ricardo Basterra, Marta and Hugo Abarrategui Andiazabal, representing FEVA, and Damian Cebey, San Nicolas club president, welcomed students and teachers to the first barnetegi of the new cycle in San Nicolas. Last Saturday the first intensive Basque class for teacher training, took place in San Nicolas, Argentina as part of the Euskara Munduan program supported by HABE. Co-organized with FEVA and the local Euskal Etxea, the course will run until next Saturday and is, for most participants, their first introduction to Basque. At this meeting, students from different countries in South American, specifically Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, will begin a cycle of four years of training via distance and online education starting on March 4 with two face to face meetings a year.

The sounds of Danborrada reached around the world thanks to Basque clubs from Sydney to Argentina

Mexico City's Basque club's Danborreros after playing at the festivities (photo VascosMexico) It’s over, the drums have stopped beating but for 24 hours Donostia and Azpeitia were in a state of permanent party. Neither the wind nor the rain could dampen the spirits of thousands of Basques that came from Euskal Herria to the whole world, thanks to several Basque clubs. In Argentina, the Euskal Etxea in Arrecifes celebrated the festival for the first time with unbeatable atmosphere. In Mexico City, the veteran Tamborrada at the Basque club showed for one more year how to do it well, and in Madrid, the Children’s Danborrada took to the streets, gathering applause and smiles from their proud family members.
