Basque language and cooking classes for youth without resources at the Palacio Anchieta in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Eusko Brasildar Etxea board members along with Kinku Zinkunegi during a visit to the Restaurnate Escola a the Palacio Anchiete in Sao Paulo (photo EuskoBrasildarEtxea) The Eusko Brasildar Etxea Basque club in Sao Paulo has started the year with numerous projects to teach Basque and to introduce the Basque culture in the Brazilian capital. One of the most striking is the Basque class offered at the Palacio Anchieta, the headquarters of the municipal seat of Sao Paulo. This locale also houses the Escola restaurant that provides cooking training to youth without resources. Sixty students, plus nearly twenty civil servants of the Chamber attend Basque classes there.

More than 1,000 students will study Basque in 2013 in Basque clubs in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil

Kinku Zinkunegi, HABE technician, with the board of the Euskal Erria Basque club in Montevideo (photo HABE) HABE has renewed agreements to support Basque classes in South American clubs recently. Thanks to these agreements, more than 1,000 adult students will take advantage of Basque classes in clubs in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil during the 2013-2014. In addition, those involved in teacher training as part of the Euskara Munduan program are very satisfied with the first Barnetegi of 2013-2016 that took place in San Nicolas, Argentina.

Carnival in the Basque Country and the Diaspora: Fat Thursday in Uztaritze in the heart of the Hartzaro Festival

Images of the Hartzaro Festival and traditional Basque Carnival celebrations in Lapurdi Carnival starts with the traditional celebration of Fat Thursday in a large part of the Basque Country taking costumes, parties, and tradition to the streets. In the Basque province of Lapurdi, for example the Hartzaro Festival will resume the custom celebrating the day with the presentation of a show entitled, “Tutak.” In the Diaspora, Basque clubs like that in New York and Barcelona, among many others all over the world, are also organizing costume parties.

NABO celebrating 40 years this year, held its first meeting of 2013 with Asier Vallejo as a guest

The head table at Saturday's NABO meeting that included Asier Vallejo as an honored guest (photo EuskalKultura.com) NABO, the North American federation of Basque clubs, held its winter meeting on February 2, 2013, the first of its three annual get-togethers in Salt Lake City, coinciding with the Utah Basque Club’s annual dinner/dance. Thirty-one Basque entities were represented at the meeting that was also attended by Asier Vallejo, Director of Basque Communities Abroad, in his first official trip to the Diaspora. NABO is celebrating the fortieth anniversary of its founding in 1973 in Reno.

The North American Basque Organizations organizes a summer Barnetegi in Euskal Herria

2011 Korrika participants in front of the Basque Center NABO, the North American Organization of Basque clubs, has opened registration for those interested in attending an intensive Basque course this July in the Basque Country. The classes will take place at the Maizpide Barnetegi in Lazkao with an English-speaking professor. The price of the course, including room and board, is 414 Euros. On the other hand, the Basque community in Boise has begun organizing Korrika that will take place on March 9.

The Director of Basque Communities Abroad, Asier Vallejo, will arrive in Boise today as part of his trip to the US

After participating in NABO’s winter meeting in Salt Lake City, the Basque Government’s new director of Basque Communities Abroad, Asier Vallejo, will arrive in Boise, Idaho tonight as part of his tour of US Basque communities. This is Vallejo’s first trip since being named to the position just three weeks ago. His visit will include stops in Salt Lake City, Reno, Boise and New York.

The Etxepare Basque Institute promotes the Basque language at the Expolangues Fair at the Sorbonne in Paris

Mari Jose Olaziregi, director of the Promotion and Diffusion of the Basque Language at the Etxepare Basque Institute, at the London Language Show (photo Etxepare) One of the largest fairs dedicated to the languages of the world, Expolangues starts this Wednesday. As in past years, Basque will also be present thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute, who will have its own stand. Accompanying the Institute will be the Azkue Foundation and Langune, a business association from the industrial sector of the language of Euskal Herria. There will also be other activities during the fair including a literary musical show presented by writer Mariasun Landa and txistulari Garikoitz Mendizabal.

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu (photo Irekia) In his first message to the Basque community abroad, Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu has highlighted the importance of the Basques in the world in the internationalization of Euskadi, “one of the first priorities of the new Basque Government.” In his message that was disseminated through Irekia, the Lehendakari communicated that the Basque Executive has proposed “a policy of engagement and commitment to the Basque community abroad,” mainly through the existing network of Basque clubs and federations, “whose growth we’d like to promote,” he says. “We know that you represent the guarantee for the growth of our country. And that is our objective.”

Basques in Boise start the year strong: Danborrada at the Ikastola and Euzkaldunak Inc. elections

Kids from the Boiseko Ikastola dressed in full regalia for the Tamborrada (photo BoisekoIkastola) Boise is possibly the most Euskaldun city in the US due to the large Basque presence in the state of Idaho. Boise has, for example, the only Ikastola in the country. The Boisean Ikastola is a preschool where children learn the Basque language and culture. They are now getting ready to celebrate Santa Ageda, but last week they enjoyed San Sebastian Day complete with Danborrada, according to teacher Irune Sanchez. On the other hand the Boisean Euzkaldunak Basque club has a new board of directors for 2013, led by Martin Bilbao.
