The Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno will celebrate its 13th Annual Conference this Wednesday and Thursday. This year’s theme is “Fiscal Systems and the Crisis” which proposes the analysis of the “resistance of public finances and self-government” in Euskadi, Catalonia and Nevada. The conference was co-organized by Joseba Agirreazkuenaga full professor of history at the University of the Basque Country and this year’s William Douglass Distinguished Visiting Scholar.

The author himself will travel to Argentina to present his work at the 40th International Book Fair. Amerikanuak gathers images and stories of farmhouses built by the Amerikanuak, nickname given Basques who returned home after immigrating to America and showed the fortunes made on their journey in some way. During his stay in Argentina, photographer Kepa Etchandy will also attend “Buenos Aires Celebrates” and will tour some Basque clubs. The Buenos Aires Book Fair will run from April 24th to May 12th.

The Jasone Basque club in Asuncion held its Annual General Assembly on Tuesday March 18th, and the presidency changed. The current president expressed his desire to step down, due to health problems and so club members elected a new board of directors lead this time by Jose M. Bruno Lacarra, accompanied by Pedro Gamarra, Vice-President, Eddy Irigoitia, Secretary, Ramon Cueto, Treasurer and Galo Eguez, sub-Treasurer, among others.

As every year, the Beti Aurrera Aberri Etxea once again participated in the main parade of the Patagonian Sovereignty Festival organized by the city of Carmen de Patagones, at the south of the province of Buenos Aires. The festival runs for a week and provides the public with top notch artistic and cultural performances along with a wide array of gastronomic offerings. Local communities also paraded through the streets and in the case of the Basques did so flying the Ikurriña, dressed in typical costumes.

Summer vacation is over in Argentina and the things are getting back to normal at Basque clubs across the country. Ikasles and Irakasles have returned to the classroom and are getting ready to begin a new Basque language class that will include exercises and conversation, but also games and songs. As part of the Euskara Munduan program, a large number of clubs will offer classes in 2014. Opportunities are also increasing in language schools and universities that have Basque language and culture lecturers. Following is a list with information about courses and sites.

The Rio Grande do Sul (RGDS) Basque club in Brazil will join in on the third reunion of the Insaurriaga family that will take place in Monte Bonito. It is a long Basque saga that began with their great-grandfather, Eugenio Jose, leaving his home town of Huesca in 1840. Last year, nearly one hundred family members gathered. The RGDS Basque club also encouraged other Basque families in the area to follow the Insaurriaga example and organize their own get-togethers.

The International Independent Film Festival in Buenos Aires will be the setting to introduce Argentina to the documentary Asier ETA biok directed by brother and sister, Aitor and Amaia Merino, from Donostia. Translated into Spanish as Asier y yo the film will be screened on April 9th, 10th and 12th in Buenos Aires with Aitor Merino present for the debut. Asier ETA biok tells the story of the friendship between the director of the film and Asier Aranguren who joined ETA in 2002.

After enjoying world wide success in the hard rock scene, the popular Basque band, Berri Txarrak, will tour the U.S. again this April. They will visit many major cities along the west coast and end the tour with a special show in NYC accompanied by The Naked Heroes.

More than forty communities participated last Saturday on the Avenida de Mayo in Buenos Aires to give color and form to the latest edition of the Communities' Gastronomic Patio. The local Basque community also participated in the huge event, represented this time by the Laurak Bat Basque club as well as the Basque Language School Euskaltzaleak. Hundreds of visitors approached the stands attracted by the aroma of good food as well as Basque traditional musical instruments. Among authorities present were the Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina, Sara Pagola and the Chief of Staff of the City of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta.
