Luis 'Koitz' Foncillas will exhibit 'Fire Island: Out of the Sun' at the Verle Annis Gallery of the University of Southern California in LA, starting on April 24th. The exhibit gathers a selection of images taken over ten years that capture the exceptional character of the New York island that is a summer destination for the gay community. The exhibition comes as a result of 'Koitz' being the 2015 recipient of the USC Founders Cultura Award, that helps promoting and cultivating awareness of an emerging artist whose work is socially and culturally minded.

The Basque club in Chascomus, Argentina provides a wide range of activities including some new Basque classes taught by local teacher, Maitena Etchepare. In addition, as every year, there will be dancing, pelota and mus. This is how the Zingirako Euskaldunak have begun the year, under the direction of recently elected president Sebastian Errecart.

The College of San Ignacio of Loyola, known as “Las Vizcainas,” will be the site this Thursday of an international conference that will discuss the Basque presence in Mexico, both a notable and influential one, from the 16th century to the present. The conference was organized by the Historical Archive Jose Maria Basagoiti Noriega and the Bascongada Society of Friends of the Country in Mexico.

Besides giving a recital of its traditional repertoires, the group will come to the Buenos Aires Celebra festival on the Avenida de Mayo with its new album “Songs for after Lunchr” that will play for the first time for the audience at the “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” festival that will inundate the city with typical Basque songs to be sung after a long meal, including traditional ones and some party songs.

Bay Area residents will have another Basque-inspired restaurant to go to since, today, Aatxe will open its doors at 5:30pm. It will be ran by Chef Ryan Pollnow. The Ne Timeas group – a well-known firm in the business and owner of Aatxe − declared that their chef fell in love in San Sebastian with Basque pintxos culture and he will offer in the new restaurant California cuisine influenced by the Basque tapas culture.

Asier Vallejo, director for the Basque Community Abroad, left the Basque Country yesterday for Uruguay and Argentina, where he will meet over the coming days with Basque club representatives as well as national federations. This weekend he will be in Montevideo to meet with FIVU and members of Uruguayan Basque clubs. Next week he will visit Basque clubs in Argentina and on Saturday, will attend FEVA’s annual assembly in Buenos Aires.

Participants in the “Tour of the Dairies” will race classic cars and will cover 50 kilometers between Cañuelas to General Las Heras, where there will be an awards ceremony and there will be a Basque Taberna with a meal featuring a “typical menu from the Basque Country.” The event will take place on April 19 at 7pm and the starting line will be on Route 205 in front of the Golf Club in Cañuelas. The event is organized by the Zazpirak Bat Basque club in General Las Heras.

The relationship between Iceland and the Basque Country have not always been good; actually, there was a time where they were terrible, due to the killing of 32 Basque whalers who were stranded on the Icelandic coast in 1615. Now, on the 400th anniversary of the massacre, an international conference will analyze the cultural exchange between the two countries, when a symbolic event of reconciliation will also take place.

Representatives from Argentina, Peru, Chile, Venezuela and Uruguay will begin matches as part of the 8th Mercomus Mus Championships that are organized this time by the Euskaro Basque Club in Montevideo. The competing teams arrived last night with their delegations and attended a welcome cocktail before the competition began this morning. The tournament will run through Saturday night with a farewell dinner and awards ceremony.

Sonia Hernandez Albistegui left her hometown in the Basque Country when she was 17 to study optics in Alicante, Spain. After that she moved to Palencia and then to Valladolid, where she has been living for three decades. This Spanish city in Castilla-León is the place she works, where she is rasing her family. Born in Valladolid, her daughters Ane and Iraia, 9 and 4, are grewing up speaking Euskera at home, and they oldest already speaks some English at school.
