A delegation from the Valparaiso region of Chile visits Gipuzkoa to strengthen business and trade relations

Gipuzkoa’s Deputy General, Martin Garitano, welcomed a delegation from Chile made up of local and regional authorities and delegates for the four universities in the country’s second city and site of the National Congress of Chile, at the Provincial Palace yesterday morning.  Garitano was accompanied by the Deputy of Innovation, Rural Development and Tourism, Jon Peli Uriguen, and the deputy of the Provincial Administration and Public Service, Garbiñe Errekondo.

A new restaurant ranking situates Azurmendi by Eneko Atxa in Larrabetzu, Bizkaia as the best in Europe

We all know that there is no accounting for taste and that the rankings of good restaurants and the lists of the best chefs include valuations for all tastes.  However, there must be something with Basque cooking and its chefs when all lists coincide in placing them high on the list in regards to world gastronomy.  A new list published yesterday, places Azurmendi by Eneko Atxa as the best restaurant in Europe.  There are seven Basque restaurants that figure on this list of the “top 100” on the old continent.

For another year, members of the Basque community in Montevideo gathered at the Gernika Plaza to commemorate the anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, April 26, 1937 by Nazi aviators and the Italian allies of General Franco.  Enrique Poittevin, president of FIVU, board members and members of the Euskaro and Haize Hegoa Basque clubs attended the event.

The journalists kept everyone abreast of their activities through social media: tweets, selfies with the Lehendakari, relaxing.  Another point of view of the trip can be found on this blog.

Less than 3 months. Idaho is now counting down to Jaialdi, while Boise is getting ready for the big Basque festival, a TV crew from Channel 7 came to the Basque Country.  The team included Xanti Alcelay, born in Boise whose father is from Oñati. Who could ask for a better guide?  For eight days they toured the country broadcasting live from Donostia, Bilbao, Gasteiz and Gernika.  They also interviewed players from athletic and Lehendakari Urkullu who will attend Jaialdi in July.

On the anniversary of the bombing of Gernika, the Rosario Basque club was joined by many other institutions in the Diaspora to remember the attack suffered by the Basque people (photo EE)

The Basque club began its 2015 program of activities by commemorating in separate events two important dates for the Basque community: the Day of the Basque Homeland (Aberri Eguna) and the 78th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika.  Besides these two events, the cub continues with its usual activity with dance, language and film.

The Euskaltzaleok Basque club in the city Valencia and the surrounding area of the País Valencia has launched its first photography contest which is now accepting entries.  The theme is “Basque Traces in Valencia.” The contest is open to everyone and the deadline to submit entries is June 7.

The Pau Basque club, Lagunt eta Maita, will be the site of the meeting of Basque clubs in France that will be attended by the clubs in Bordeaux, Paris, and Lagunt eta Maita. The event will also be attended by Asier Vallejo, Director of the Basque Community Abroad for the Basque Government.

The Lekumberry family in Gardnerville, Nevada to open Douglas County Historical Society’s storytelling program

The Douglas County Historical Society seeks to enrich lives by preserving local history and making it accessible to its communities and visitors, as stated in their website. Following this motto, the private and non-profit corporation has programmed, for the first time ever, a storytelling evening, for this May the 3rd. The Lekumberry family, owner of the J.T. Basque Bar in Gardnerville, Nevada has been invited to share their history and stories with their fellow citizens. “It’s an honor for us,” said Marie-Louise Lekumberry to EuskalKultura.com.

Members of the returned Basque-Venezuelan community celebrated a successful annual event in Galdakao

More than one hundred Basque-Venezuelans participated last weekend in Galdakao, Bizkaia at their annual event organized by the Simon Bolivar Association.  The event broke last year’s attendance record and included people from at least three generations, with emotional details about the transmission of the Basque-Venezuelan sentiment and that of the Diaspora in Euskadi.

Literature, talks and music guarantees a Basque presence at the 41st Book Fair in Buenos Aires

As every year, the Juan de Garay Basque Argentinean Foundation will introduce its latest production at the International Book Fair in Buenos Aires.  Additionally, titles published in Argentina as well as the Basque Country will be available to the public until May 11 by various publishing houses.  The main events will take place on May 5 in the Hall Domingo F. Sarmiento and will include talks and concerts.
