“It was a great picnic,” told Louis Iturriria, president of the Kern County Basque Club, EuskalKultura.com. The Bakersfield, California located Euskal Etxea celebrated its 43rd annual ‘besta’ on Memorial Weekend and it was even bigger than last year’s edition, even though, in 2014, they also held a NABO convention, which always brings more people. Getting back the tradition of showcasing Herri Kirolak, or Basque rural sports, may have had a positive effect. “I was surprised, the bleachers were packed,” pointed out Iturriria.

The Euskel Biotza Basque Club in Roldan had a very busy month of May with participating in the Dantzari Get-Together in Chivilcoy, doing a presentation at the local Fair of Communities, as well as visiting the delegation of the Basque Government in Puerto Madero. Even if they are disappointed in not being able to attend “Buenos Aires Celebrates,” they were there with their fabric full of wishes and desires.

Today’s Official Bulletin of the Basque Country included the call for this year’s training program, Gaztemundu, aimed at youth in the Basque Diaspora. Applications may be submitted starting tomorrow and will last for a month. This year the number of spots available is 15.

The Semana Nacional Vasca in Argentina will take place this year from October 26-November 1 in Macachin. The return of the huge festival to the area after 21 years has generated great enthusiasm in the club as well as some logistic questions. EuskalKultua.com has spoken with the organizers in hopes of alleviating some doubts: “We have worked hard to organize the event and we are ready to confirm lodging for everyone wishing to participate,” they said.

Navarrese historian Amaia Iraizoz (Aritzu, 1987) will conduct her PhD research on the effects the return of the migrants that went to South and North America had in the pre-Spanish Civil War society, in the area of Erro (Navarre). “Most of the researches done so far focus on the effect of the migrants in their new homelands, there are not a lot of works like this one,” told EuskalKultura.com, from the University of Nevada-Reno, were she’s pursuing her degree.

Nearly 30 Basque clubs will participate this Friday in the Klasikoen Irakurraldia 2015 (Classics Reading 2015), via videos that will be shown on stage at the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao. This year, the chosen work is Narrazio Guztiak by Joseba Sarrionandia, who will be in charge of beginning the reading, also on video. The event will run from 8am to 8pm.

Boiseko Ikastola’s summer program will begin on June 22. But it won't be at the St. Paul's Catholic Student Center, as it has been for the past 18 years. Instead, it will be in the building they acquired on March 2. It's located in the busy Broadway Street, in the capital city of Idaho, and it's in front of a public school. “It will give us more visibility,” told teacher Oihana Andion EuskalKultura.com. “It's a nice improvement”

The Euskal Sustraiak Basque club has settled in Trenque Lauquen with its informative and educational offerings on issues such as Euskera and Basque culture, as well as dance. This year the club will also begin a Mus workshop, requested from a number of members. In addition to these regular activities the club is also putting together a program of activities to celebrate its recent 17th anniversary with dinner and dancing and an invitation to participate in the San Juan Bonfire.

It’s here. The NABO Mus Finals will be celebrated this Saturday, May 30, at the Txoko Ona Basque Club, in Homedale, Idaho. Selected players from 43 different clubs will participate and, the winning couple, will represent the US in the next Mus World Championship, to be celebrated in Mar de Plata, Argentina. “Every year there are more people willing to play in the finals, because participating in the World Championship is an honor,” said Pierro Etcharren, mus chairperson of NABO, to EuskalKultura.com. He is one of the hundreds that will travel to Homedale tomorrow.

The Bizkaian Company, Alianzo, has developed the game “Euskal Quiz,” in a app for smartphones with questions about Basque towns and geography. Anyone able to correctly answer questions on culture, food, history, spots or Basque towns and places, can become the mayor, and the person with the most correct answers can become the virtual “Lehendakari.” The app is free and is in Basque.
