Argentinean Basques in Gral. Villegas joined in the march against gender violence with posters in Basque and Spanish

Besides the regular Basque club activities in General Villegas to spread the Basque culture in their club as well as part of a project in a rural school in the town of Elordi, club members also participated last week in a national walk with the slogan, “Not one less,” against gender violence.  The Villegasko Euskaldunak was present at the demonstration with posters in Basque and Spanish.

The Oinkari Basque Dancers of Boise, Idaho participated, on May 25th, at the 44th annual Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle, Washington−one of the biggest folk festivals in the US, which showcases dances, music, storytelling, and all kinds of artistic expressions from all over the world. Over 235,000 people visited the Seattle Center, where the artists performed. “It was fantastic,” said Lael Uberuaga, PR of the Oinkaris, in conversation with EuskalKultura.com.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country published on June 5 included the resolution for cultural tour grants where there are Basque clubs abroad.  A total of 10 applicants received help towards round trip tickets for the tour presented.

The book published by Txalaparta (Tafalla, Navarre)  looks to “bring the figure of Atahualpa Yupanqui to the Basques in Euskal Herria and if possible, also to the Diaspora in general, bringing to light the close relationship between the artist and the Basque people.”  Atahualpa Yupanqui, Indian, Creole and Basque is for sale in Basque bookstores and in Spain; besides that you can purchase it online, even though its author, Sergio Recarte, has not dismissed the possibility of presenting it in Argentina as well.

Basque presenter Julian Iantzi is eager to travel to Boise's Jaialdi this July. There, he will act as a guide for a group of travelers ready to live the Basque experience to the maximum. “The intention is to get together with the Basque Diaspora and eat, dance, sing and have a good time with them,” he says. Two of the trips operated by Overtrails are already full, but there are still a few spots left on the third that besides Jaialdi will also visit Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

During the week of its 92nd birthday, the Basque club in Comodoro Rivadavia in Argentinean Patagonia didn’t only celebrate its birthday, but it also participated in the commemorative festivities for the Day of the Motherland.  The Basque club has also organized a charity tea, to benefit a local institution where its dancers will also take participate.

She’s been in the US for 19 years and has two Basque-American children who are 11 and 9. Originally from the Biscayan town of Ortuella, Henar Chico is a software technician and translator. She adds to that being a Boisean, a Basque speaker trained in the USA and lately a member, cofounder and president of the recently formed Boiseko Athletic Club Peña, the Bilbao Athletic fan club in Idaho’s capital.

The event was highlighted by the presence of Basque descendants, students and professors of history, art and local officials.  Enrique Poittevin Gilmet, president of FIVU, the Basque Uruguayan association's federation, was also present and addressed the crowd.  During the ceremony a plaque was unveiled and a sapling from the Tree of Gernika was planted.

On Sunday the online radio program "8 Herrialdeak Zuzenean", hosted by Benoit Etcheverry and Robert Acheritogaray, will celebrate its 10 years on air, with an special broadcast full of surprises. The program will connect live with the Petaluma Picnic, contributing to the festival vibe with a concert by Basque group Begiz-Begi (they will be touring the US in July, so make sure to listen to their music!). The “Excellence in Basque Studies” course at the Etxepare Basque Institute pays tribute this year to writer Mariasun Landa

Mariasun Landa, the most translated Basque female writer, alongside Bernardo Atxaga

The Etxepare Basque Institute is offering another edition of “Excellence i Basque Studies,” during hte month of July, as part of the Summer Courses at the University of the Basque Country.  The goal is to train professors, or professor candidates in the lectureships supported by Etxepare at various universities around the world.  This year, the course will honor Mariasun Landa, author of literature for children and youth and one of the most translated Basque writers along with Bernardo Atxaga.
