Basque festival season continues in full swing in the US, and this weekend the party moves to Reno, Nevada, and Gooding, Idaho. The Reno Zazpiak Bat will kick-off its 49th Basque Festival tomorrow, with celebrations extending to Saturday; the Gooding Basque Association, on the other hand, will hold its Annual Basque Picnic this Sunday.

The Oinkari Basque dancers have been on the road the entire month of July. The first part of the month they were in Washington DC to participate in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and as soon as they were done there, they jumped on a place for the Basque Country. The group visted Iurreta, returning the visit that they received from the mayor recently in Boise, and took advantage of being there to participate in a Basque dance workshop with the local Mikel Deuna Dantza Taldea.

The Euskal Etxea in Maipú has been organizing its 40th Birthday party for months. Finally, the day arrived and “everything was perfect, as we expected,” said club sources. One of the tasks over these months was to gather those who participated over the forty years in the club’s construction, and maintenance. The board was able to find them and each one was recognized at the lunch.

The International Federation of Basque Pelota confirmed that Santiago, Chile would be the site of the VI World Pelota Cup 30m Fronton, November 19-27, 2016. The frontons designated for the competition, in the capital of Mapocho have been the Euzko Etxea (Santiago Basque Club) and the Estadio Español in Las Condes, according to the Berriketari newsletter of the Chilean capital city.

This Sunday, July 17, Alex Garate’s group, Zingaros, will perform in Vitoria-Gasteiz, as part of its European tour that will also take them to Poland, Germany, Denmark, Austria and Slovakia, concluding in the Basque Country. Garate, a professor of physics, mountain climber and accordionist, lives I Cordoba, where he moved in 1999. The group, created in 2004, in Argentina fusions gypsy music with the Argentine tango.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV) published the call for the 2016 Gaztemundu program yesterday, beginning one day after the application period for the same. This year’s edition is dedicated to Basque gastronomy. There are 25 spots to fill and interested people will need to submit a video that certifies culinary knowledge, recording a culinary proposal as part of the application. The program will take place from October 1-16 in Donostia.

Basque and Navarran clubs in Argentina also had good reason to celebrate last weekend: on the one hand, San Fermin, that painted the clubs and streets in red and white; on the other, it was the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence, commemorated on July 9th with community parades and popular festivals. Some clubs celebrated each separately, and others together. Here is the first photo gallery of San Fermin 2016.

An original idea of Ignacio Esquiroz, alboka player, is the group comprised of Nicolás Iribarren, Anabel Jaureguiberry, Francisco Gándara and Franco Filippi. In the words of Esquiroz, “We are the result of the inevitable meeting for two passions, Basque folklore and music. Through “Zutarriak” one can appreciate how artists in the Eighth Province once again gather around a fire lit by our grandparents, to claim our Basque and Argentine identity, as well as our universal one.”

The chain of Basque restaurants, Sagardi, continues to expand with upcoming opening sin Mexico City and London. In both places, the company is currently completing its staff, in hopes of having ready for their respective openings. From Mexico, a job offer has come to us for the position of Maître’ D. We will publish the rest of the job offers soon, as soon as they are confirmed by the company.

Estebe Salgado came to the US with a swimming scholarship, and got his degree in the Exact Sciences. He later delved into the labor market and today enjoys the success of his own company that sells txakoli, cider and wine from the Basque Rioja.
