We recently received various news from the Itxaropen Basque Club in Saladillo, Argentina: students visiting its headquarterd from neighboring schools, new functions as part of the Basque Film Series and the enthronement of the Saint Ignatius (San Inazio) of Loyola statue among others. But the most original has to do with a Basque and a challenge. Carlos “Caia" Zarragoicoechea biked for 55 hours continuously, peddling his bicycle around the main plaza in the city and broke the original record set 40 years ago.

The Sodre National Ballet of Uruguay has offered its artistic direction post to ballet dancer from Bilbao, Igor Yebra. Even if the decision isn’t definitive, the Basque dancer would then replace Julio Bocca in one of the most prestigious ballets in Latin America. The dancer commented that the mere fact that they were considering him for the post is a huge honor, especially to take over for a dancer like Bocca.

The Government of Navarre has begun the process of declaring bertsolaritza as an asset of cultural interest (BIC) in the intangible goods category after a proposal made earlier this year by the Nafarroako Bertsozaleen Elkartea Association. This declaration implies endowing bertsolaritza, or the art of improvised verse, with the highest degree of protection as set forth in the Law on Cultural Heritage, and is expected to take place this autumn.

On the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, the Chair for Basque Free Thought at the National University of La Plata (UNLP) and the Euzko Etxea organized an event “Gernika: iruditik soinura,” (Gernika: from image to sound), which used Picasso’s work as its focus. Jose Saldias spoke about the painting and Maestro Maximo D. Pujol presented the suite “Guernica,” that was later performed by the university’s string quartet.

The Euskal Etxea in Barcelona has published a job offer for an administrator to become part of the Basque-Catalan club’s team. Eligible persons would be in charge of the club’s accounts and administration. He/she should have a corresponding degree, and experience in similar jobs. Knowledge of Basque, Catalan and Spanish is also valued/required. Work would be done in the mornings. Deadline to apply is Monday, September 25th.

Beginning in 1949 due to a Government's decree, every September 4th tribute is paid to immigrants all over Argentina. And even if this is the official date, festivities run all month long, organized by collectivities in every city and town. Celebrations this year included some novelties in the case of the Basque community. These include the Festival of Collectivities in Ushuaia that had a Basque stand for the first time.

The Eusko Brasildar Etxea, the youngest Sao Paulo Basque Club, has announced its plans for the coming months beginning with a delegation from the club attending Semana Vasca 2017 in San Nicolas, Argentina, followed by a trip to Santiago, Chile, and an ambitious plan for may 2018 for a trip to Euskal Herria to improve their Basque in a barnetegi in Lazkao, followed by a month-long tour of the country, north and south.

Among the 85 texts submitted the jury unanimously chose “The Sea in Her Eyes,” by Maria Valeria Aramaburu. The winner has two good reasons to be happy: on the one hand, because she and the Basque community and rooths are being recognized in Tandil; and secondly, because first prize is a trip to “the homeland of her ancestors," a trip to Euskal Herria that she will take next year with her daughter, Begoña.

Students at the Complutense University in Madrid (UCM) can now get credit for studying Basque at the UCM. This news came to us from Professor Karlos Cid Abasolo who teaches Philology and Euskera at the university. This is not a trivial advancement and so Euskera students and local Euskaltzales “have a reason to celebrate today together with the songs and music of singer-songwriter Josu Bergara who will perform at the university today presenting his latest album Kanta txikien indarra.”

Thanks to the “Euskara Munduan” program, more than 2,000 people study Euskera in Basque clubs around the world. The 234,000 Euros is intended to support some of the expenses of the important effort made by Basque club students and teaches in Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Oceania in terms of teaching and learning Basque.
