The Subcommittee on Culture at the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea-Centro Vasco Francés organizes an interesting series of talks annually. As part of this program, Mariana Fernandez Castelli will give a talk today entitled, “Donibane Lohizune, a Charming City,” at 7:30pm. As part of the effort to provide more cultural opportunities to the community, the Subcommittee on Culture also provides intensive Basque classes that meet on Tuesdays from 7pm-9pm, and will run through December.

The Extraordinary General Assembly of the Valparaiso Eusko Etxea, in the Fifth Region of Chile, has elected a new board with Eñaut Gereñu Mujika as its president. He is accompanied by Gonzalo Arrellano, vice-president; Sandra Travieso, treasurer; Juan Manuel Olaechea, pro-treasurer; Beatriz Arizaga, secretary; and Lorena Espinosa, pro-secretary, among others.

Activities will begin on Friday the 29th, although the main proposal will take place on Saturday. Saturday meetings will begin at 9am and will run until evening when there will be a fraternization meal to share. There will be no lack of Basque music and dancing either. Clubs who have confirmed their attendance are Comodoro Rivadavia, Neuquén-Cipolletti (Baskos de la Confluencia), Río Colorado, Puerto Madryn and San Martín de los Andes. There will also be another Basque film session organized by the local club.

Each year, a number of young Basques begin, or continue, their studies at US colleges and universities with scholarships that allow them to advance in their sports careers. After the summer break, the Euskal Etxea Artea in Mallorca will begin another season in October, as they do every year. The island's Basque association has come to EuskalKultura.com in hopes of sharing their culture offerings that, even though beginning last week, is also announcing organizational meetings for this Thursday, related to the classes in Euskera, coordinated and taught by Xabier Egurrola.

Three screenings to a full house marked a before and after for the “Baskos of the Confluence” Basque club. The event was so well received that the Argentine town of Cipolletti (Rio Negro, Patagonia) invited the club to participate in its book fair October 6-15. Before this, members of the young club, traveled this weekend to Viedma to the 4th gathering of Basque clubs in Patagonia.

The Mayor of Pamplona, Joseba Asiron, welcomed new president of the Navarrese Club in Rosario, Raul Osvaldo Amatriain, to his office. The meeting is part of the introductions that Amatriain is carrying out during his visit to Navarre after becoming president of the Centro Navarro in Rosario last December.

Continuing with the celebrations in Argentina for Immigrant Day, one of the more original celebrations this year is the event in Trenque Lauquen where more than 300 artists represented the “arrival of immigrants” in front of the city hall. But not only the Basques in Trenque Lauquen participated, photo gallery including images from celebrations in Concordia, Pergamino and Tandil at their respective community festivals.

The works of Miguel Etxebarria reflect the customs, characters, and colors of Euskal Herria in a European Basque atmosphere, but also as part of the Argentine and diaspora geography. The exhibit “Basques from there. Basques from here,” can be visited in San Nicolas and in Buenos Aires. In San Nicolas, as part of the Semana Nacional Vasca: and in Buenos Aires during the last days of November at the Hall of Honor of the Legislature.

The Eusko Alkartasuna Basque Club in Sao Paulo has organized its 2nd Photography Contest especially aimed at Basques in the Diaspora. The theme is open, so any photo referring to the Basque Diaspora is eligible. Members of any Basque club, or Basque community around the world are invited to participate. The hope is to bring awareness to the Basque activity around the world. Selected photos will be published in the club’s 2018 calendar. Deadline to submit photos is October 10th. Come on, participate!
