The Madrid Euskal Etxea announces “Euskal Jaia 2017,” music, sports and Basque entertainment, October 7th at El Retiro

Poster invitation for the 2017 Basque Festival next Saturday at the El Retiro Park organized by the Madrid Euskal Etxea

On October 7th at the Retiro Park in Madrid, in the pond and the magnificent space, “Casa de Vacas” with an indoor theater and patio.  The program is completely free and will begin at 10:15am with yacht races with Ur-Kirolak from Donostia and Itsasoko Ama from Santurtzi challenging the two Madrid teams.  The festivities will continue with performances by Kukai, Pauline & Juliette, the Basque choir and Txistularis from Madrid, and the group Korrontzi, along with pintxos, txakoli, sagardoa…

The Lagun Onak Basque Club in Pergamino welcomed more than 30 representatives from a dozen Basque clubs at an gathering convened by FEVA

The Euskal Etxeas gathering held in Pergamino included a Tamborrada workshop

More than 30 directors from a dozen Basque clubs gathered last weekend in Pergamino to participate in a FEVA’s Euskal Etxea event.  For two days they held activities oriented especially to club directors but also open workshops to the community.  The Pergamino Basque Club is very satisfied with the weekend, especially since it allowed them to gather “face to face, which is imperative today between Basque club managers.”

Resolution for Basque club grants for Basque instruction 2017

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (EHAA-BOPV) as included the Resolution of September 15, 2017 in its latest issue from the Director General of HABE which regulates grants to Basque clubs for Euskera instruction during the period of October 2017-September 2018.  Now approved the total budget to be awarded is 234,000 Euros.

Basque clubs in Argentina and the Diaspora show their support for Catalonia on the events on October 1

Representatives from various Basque Club gathered in Pergamino showed their support for the Catalan people

The actions of the Spanish police last Sunday, during the call by the government of Catalonia to vote in a referendum, declared ilegal by the courts in Spain, left almost one thousand people injured.  Images and videos taken in the streets of Barcelona and other were shared by the media and social media and the reaction of many Basque people and entities in the Diaspora was immediate: solidarity with the Catalan people.

As part of the activities organized in Pehuajó, province of Buenos Aires to mark the International Day of Peace, members of the Euskal Etxea Etxe Alai held two activities.  In the morning the planted an oak in front of the Arc of Peace, and in the afternoon, as part of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, they unveiled a reproduction of Picasso’s work in the main hall of the clubhouse.

The Delegation of Euskadi in the US is a member in New York of the European American Chamber of Commerce (EACC), an entity that included the Basque Delegation in New York as its “Member of the Month” in its latest newsletter.  Founded in 1926 as the Franco-American Chamber of Commerce, the EACC is comprised of 750 entities with the aim of promoting relationships on both sides of the Atlantic.

FIVU and Haize Hegoa at the 90th anniversary of the “Otegui” bridge in Minas

The “Otegui” bridge joins the banks of the Arroyo at the height of the city of Minas in the Uruguayan Department of Lavalleja.  As a tribute to the Basque roots of those who constructed it, on the 90th anniversary of its inauguration, the Lavalleja Cultural Center, the Intendance and descendants of the Otegui family invited the Federation of Basque Institutions in Uruguay and the Eusko Indarra dance group from Montevideo to participate in the commemorative events.

Carlos Gabilondo and his wife, Norma Carrizo, have experienced this year’s Zinemaldea, Donostia’s Film Festival, first hand and with eyes wide open.  The coordinators of the Traveling Basque Film, an Basque-Argentine initiative to promote Basque cinema in Argentina, are now on their way home to Argentina, to resume their work with film fans at Basque clubs and centers all over the country, beginning this Thursday with the Basque Conference at the Library of Congress.  Interview with Pello Zubiria in Berria.

A concert by Zutarriak will inaugurate the Basque Culture Conference at the Library of the National Congress

6th Basque Culture Conference at the Library of Congress

The sixth edition of the Basque Culture Conference organized by the Basque University in Buenos Aires with the collaboration of the Euskaltzaleak Euskaltegia will open its doors this Monday, October 2nd, with a concert by the Basque-Argentine musical group, Zutarriak.  The conference will run through Wednesday the 11th with a program that includes music and dance, talks and film.  The afternoon activities will take place at the Library of the National Congress of Argentina and are free and open to the public.

Lehendakari Urkullu will visit Quebec at the end of October, on a trip with a strong economic component

The delegation led by Urkullu will leave for Canada at the end of October to return the first week of November (photoIrekia)

Urkullu’s trip will take place during the last week of October and the first week of November. He will be accompanied by the Minister of Economic Development and Infrastructure, Arantxa Tapia.  Coincidently, NABO, the North American Federation of Basque entities that is comprised of Basque clubs in both the US and Canada is also celebrating its fall meeting, next week, in Montreal.  During his visit, Urkullu will also meet with the local Basque club and community in Montreal.  Article published today in Deia.
