“Successful,” show last Saturdays Euskal Jaia 2017 in the Retiro Park is being described. The Euskal Etxea in Madrid stressed the size of the crowd “from morning to night people enjoyed themselves with an exciting yacht race, the performances of the duo from Iparralde Pauline eta Juliette, who sung “Pongamos que hablo de Madrid,” with a special verse dedicated to the club, the Basque Choir from Madrid and the folk group Briganthya who got everyone dancing, along with our dance group.”

The festivities had two parts. In the morning the recreational activity took place in the Plaza Vasca, with shows and food. In the evening, the meeting took place at the clubhouse with some 100 guests that filled the hall to capacity. Last Friday, Grace Mainvil passed away at her home in Eagle, Idaho. She was an institution at the heart of a huge NABO family, and the North American Basque community. Although not as visible in the last two or three years since her diagnosis, Grace personified for years the best of our community, in values, dedication. altruism, integrity, generosity, efficiency and more qualities, without forgetting her smile that she gave everyone and summarized her selfless attitude of service and humanity.

The Union Vasca Basque Club is one of the oldest and most active in the province of Buenos Aires. For example, all you have to do is take a look at its agenda over the last few weeks, where besides their regular offerings including dance, Euskera and pilota, they also welcomed a visit by the Uzturre Munduan group from the Basque Country. The Basque entity also participated for the 32time in a row at the Rural Society Exhibition with its traditional “Basque BBQ.”

The director of EuskalKultura.com is currently in Japan carrying out a series of talks in various forums about Euskal Herria and its Diaspora. Tomorrow, Wednesday, the journalist from Donostia will give a presentation in the newly-opened Eneko Restaurant in Tokyo managed by Chef Eneko Atxa. This will be followed by presentations at the University for Foreign Studies. Previously, Etxarri visited the Euskal Etxea in Tokyo and the Asahi Cultural Center in Osaka.

Children up to the age of 12 returned last Saturday to the Euskal Echea College in Llavallol this year to celebrate the 20th edition of the Txikis Gathering organized by FEVA. During the entire day, children from the various clubs enjoyed various activities related to the Basque culture and once again met the event’s goal: to create promote and strengthen the relationship between the Basque clubs and its youngest members.

The New England Basque Club has announced a change in its direction. The Basque club that gathers Basques in this region that includes some six states from north of New York to Canada, has new leadership since September with Juan Mari Aramendi and Ander Caballero serving as president and vice-president respectively. Passing the baton after years of work are Sergio Sotelo and Naiara Azpiri. Zorionak, eskerrik asko and good luck to the four of them!

Mass was celebrated by Bishop Ojea, and Fr. Lis Lagazio Uso from the parish. After the service, the Mayor, Luis Andreotti Retegui, gathered the clergy for the ribbon cutting and the unveiling of a plaque. The inauguration ceremony of the restoration and enhancement of the parish of Our Lady of Aranzazu in San Fernando, Province of Buenos Aires closed with the “Misa Criolla” by Ariel Ramirez, sung by Patricia Sosa.

The Euskaldunak Basque Association in Quebec has planned in Montreal an entire weekend’s worth of activities that will also include the NABO Fall Meeting. Its Euskal Diasporaren Asteburua, or Basque Diaspora Weekend, will include Basque dance, herri kirolak, trainera, and lots of good food and fun besides. This will be newly-elected NABO President, Annie Gavica’s, first meeting at the helm.

Basque clubs in Patagonia held their 4th gathering at the Aberri Etxea Basque Club in Viedma, and Carmen de Patagones, where local authorities declared the activities as an event of “Public Interest.” Members of the seven Patagonian clubs participants were satisfied with the results and they fixed the date and place was set for the next meeting, in May in Comodoro Rivadavia, as part of the 96th Anniversary of the Euskal Echea Association.
