The “Urrezko Txapelak” (Golden Txapelas) awarded by Zinemaldia.CAT were presented last Sunday night and went to Handia, Converso, and Bi Txirula.  Handia, by Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi was awarded Best Fiction Film.  The film “is a magical and emotional exaltation of difference and what it means to be different,” according to the Zinemaldia.CAT the annual showcase of Basque film production in the Catalan capital organized by the Barcelona Euskal Etxea.

The Cuban Duo, D’Capricho, prepares its second album in Euskera and another tour in Euskal Herria

As Basques have left their mark on the island, there are also Cubans who have left their mark in Euskal Herria and in Euskera.  Danieuris and Daniellis Moya Avila are two young women from Manzanillo, Cuba and over the last few years have gone from town to town through the Basque Country sharing their Cuban sounds and poetry by Basque authors.  Now, and while recording their second CD in Euskera, the Cuban musicians have begun planning their fifth tour of Euskadi, most likely this summer.

FEVA will elect a new president in April after its Basque Clubs general meeting in Olavarria on March 17-18

The first Basque clubs meeting organized by FEVA in 2018 will take place at the Gure Etxe Maitea Basque Club in Olavarria on the weekend of March 17-18.  Each club is invited to send two representatives who can RSVP until March 9.  It is worth reminding everyone too that the elections for the board of directors of FEVA will take place in April, including choosing a new president.  After two terms, current FEVA President, Hugo Andiazabal, will need to vacate his place to whoever wins the election.

The new Trujillo Basque Club, Trujillo Euskal Etxea in Peru announces its first public presentation today

The association will carry out a presentation for the town of Trujillo on Friday, February 16 at 18:45pm at the auditorium of the Regional Identity Center.  The event will be a lecture by Leonel Berrocal and Wilfredo Lizarzaburu who will talk about the origin and the history of Basques in the town, and their contribution to the history of the Americas.  The new entity, established as a non-profit association, plans to contact the Basque Government soon in hopes of becoming officially recognized.

The Villa Maria Basque Club was again present at the “All the World in Alta Gracia” Festival

The festival, one of the largest in its field in South America, took place February 3-10, and gathered some 30 cultures and collectivities from abroad over the week, as well as renowned artists from all over the country.  The Euzko Etxea in Villa Maria once again participated being responsible for representing the Basques and the Basque culture and country and did so by performing typical dances, performed by the Txikis and youth from Jai Alai.

San Francisco will be the site of two meetings of Basque Clubs, for Friday and Saturday, of NABO and the North American mid-world congress meeting

Both meetings will take place at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center (photoEuskalKultura.com)

This weekend the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center will also be the site for two meetings.. On Friday, the mid-world congress regional meeting for North America, organized by the Basque Government,  attended by representatives of US clubs, as well as those in Canada, Mexico and Saint Pierre and Miquelon.  Gorka Alvarez Aranburu, Director of Basque Communities Abroad, will lead the meeting. On Saturday, NABO meeting, lead by NABO president Annie Gavica.

The San Francisco Basque Cultural Center will celebrate its 36th annual festival this weekend

Every February marks the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center’s anniversary, always on President’s Day Weekend. This year activities include an art exhibit by painter, Xabier Soubelet (Basque Country), book presentation by Begoña Echeverria (Chino), pilota matches with pilotaris from Uztaritze and the Federation of Euskadi, along with local pilotaris, and members of the National Selection of Mexico, dance, klika, choir, Basque mass, Amerikanuak, and tributes to four women, Valerie Etcharren Arrechea (NABO) and Mayte Ocafrain, Carmen Salaburu and Mayie Sorhouet (SFO). There will also be a NABO meeting and the mid-term regional World Congress meeting.

The Publisher Euskal Erria in Uruguay announced a reedition of “Gramera Berria” (1860,) a book "to teach Spanish to Basques"

“Gramera Berria,” was a manual to teach Spanish to Basques published in Buenos Aires in 1860, aimed at Basque immigrants who didn’t know the language.  A century and a half later, to introduce this interesting material, the published located in the Uruguayan capital will produce a new edition, by Alberto Angulo, Miren Itziar Enecoiz, Jon Ander Ramos and Oscar Álvarez.

Who in California doesn’t know Basque lawyer, Mike Bidart. He and his wife, Jeanette, their two children and grandchildren care for and practice the Basque heritage that they received from their ancestors, Basque-Americans, from Navarre on both sides.  Professionally, as a lawyer, Mike and his colleague, Ricardo Echeverria are respected professionals who enjoy renown in their profession.  Both have just been named “Super Lawyers” for 2018.

The Euskal Txokoa in San Martin de los Andes will soon begin the 2018 production of its homemade Patxaran “Patxagon”

The Euskal Txokoa at the 120th anniversary of San Martin de los Andes

The Basque club in this Andean town has already begun its 2018 activities program, invited by the municipality to represent the Basque community in the city’s 120th anniversary events.  The club is also firming up details to also begin preparing its “Patxagon,” and resume Basque dance classes.
