Organized by the New England Basque Club (NEBC), the event aspires to become the largest Basque festival in this part of the country. The organizing Basque club was originally mainly comprised of pilotaris who came to the US to play Jai-Alai and their families. This is why herri kirolak is a big part of their program, along with music, chefs, dantzaris from Euskadi and various American Basque clubs. All of them will participate in the inaugural parade, led by the town’s mayor.

The two volumes are entitled, Newyorktarrak, Origin of the Basque Community in New York 1880-1955, by Anna M. Aguirre, Basque born in New York, and journalist Koldo San Sebastian, and The Congregation of San Ignacio: Basque Associations in Madrid at the Threshold of the 20th Century by historian, Estibaliz Ruiz de Azua and Martinez de Ezquerecocha. These two are now numbers 30 and 31 of the Urazandi Collection published by the Basque Government. Both are available free of charge online at Euskadi.net.

Her sudden loss was quite a blow. Besides being the president of the club, she was also “a friend and the engine of the club.” Denak Bat will gather its members this weekend for a double event: Saturday afternoon for another installment of its Basque Film Series and on Sunday at noon, they will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the inauguration of the clubhouse. In this atmosphere, surrounded by members and friends Alicia Aguirre Markuleta will be remembered who passed away on April 13th.

Rocío Basterra de Vall Iturria not only has a long career in the Basque club in the county of Viedma y Carmen de Patagones: dantzari, Basque teacher, txikis’ instructor and now after the General Assembly, president of the club, the institution’s youngest and first local Basque-speaking president. Rocio, who is also known as a presenter on ETB, was thrilled with the honor.

Markel Lizeaga, Xabi Erostarbe, Andoni Ugalde and Iker Irribarria will play pilota in Bakersfield, California this weekend, traveling next week to San Francisco. In Bakersfield there will be several pilota matches on Saturday and Sunday at the site of the annual Basque picnic; and on Friday of next week, they will play in the kantxa at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center, preceding the annual San Francisco Basque Club picnic in Petaluma. Pilota fans await them anxiously.

The Basque club in Comodoro Rivadavia celebrated its 95th birthday with a big party. Dinner gathered more than 300 people and was the culmination of the weekend’s cultural, recreational and festive activities that also included the 5th meeting of Patagonian Basque clubs. Accompanying the club in its celebration was the Delegate of Euskadi, Sara Pagola, and FEVA president, Javier Ederra.

The Euskaltegi is organizing a double activity about Euskera on June 9th, the nigh before the Human Chain event called for by the Gure Esko Dago movement in Euskal Herria. At 2pm there will be a Mintzodromo that all Basque speakers are invited to, and especially Basque language students in Buenos Aires and area Basque clubs. At 6pm there will be a Triki-Poteo, to the rhythm of trikis and panderos through the bars in San Telmo where those who wish, can have a drink including the popular kalimotxo.

The Euzko Etxea Basque Club in La Plata, in the province of Buenos Aires, held its annual General Assembly las Sunday that included elections for part of its board of directors. As such, Javier Clua continues as president with Jorge Batiz serving as vice-president, Iñaki Azcarate as secretary, Maria Angeles Berrueta as pro-secretary, with Sergio Ochotorena treasurer, and Patricia Pulida as pro-treasurer. The specialized US company, Planet, has shared the image taken with an inclination between 40-60 degrees: “That is how we achieve images of the earth similar to the view that we would have from the window of an airplane,” according to the company’s spokesperson. What catches your eye in the photo is how San Mames Barria stands out and how the perspective of the Zorrotzaurre peninsula is especially emphasized.

In accordance with the club’s statutes, the General Assembly of the Euskaldunak Denak Bat Basque Club in Arrecifes, in the province of Buenos Aires, was held. Among other agenda items, those gathered also elected a new board of directors. Laureano Villa Zabaleta will take over for Maria Lujan Valliela as president, as she continues as account auditor for the club. Zorionak to everyone elected and Eskerrik Asko to all outgoing board members for their commitment and selfless work.
