Organized by the Euskal Erria Society in Montevideo, the VI Congress of Basque Culture in Uruguay was held December 10-13. The event’s inauguration was held at the Legislative Palace with a performance by pianist, Josu Okiñena, who performed “Xuxurlak,” and was sponsored by the Euskal Erria Society, Eusko Jaurlaritza and the Etxepare Basque Institute.

The “Hour of San Nicolas,” is an annual event organized byte city and the federation of local businesses. The goal of the initiative is to promote a space for concerts, art and photography exhibits and workshops that are taught locally. It also includes a varied gastronomic offering including offerings provided by the local Euzkal Etxea (sic) Basque club.

The Basque Government’s Council approved the budgets last Tuesday for the 2019 Gaztemundu program as well as grants to assist individuals in the worlwide Basque community in situations of extreme need. Only a few days remain for these to be in force, once they are published in the Official Bulletin of the Basque Country that will open the application period for both.

The city of Azul in the Province of Buenos Aires celebrated another anniversary of its founding with a day organized by the city that begin in the morning with a tribute to founder, Pedro Burgos; mass at the cathedral; a commemorative parade, and music and dance performances on Avenida Urioste. Along with other local institutions, the local Basque club, Gure Txokoa, was also part of the festivities.

With only two weeks left until the New Year, the Federation of Basque Entities in Argentina (FEVA) has announced some of its activities planned for 2019. The first Euskera activity of the year will be the Summer Barnetegi aimed at teachers in training will be held January 12-19th, for the second time at the Guillermo Larregui Basque Club in Chacabuco.
