Boise's Basque Language Immersion Preschool

The Ikastola (school where curriculum is taught in Basque) of Boise opened in 1998. Even though Ikastola, in the Basque sense connotes elementary school, the ikastola in Boise's enrollment age is from three to seven years old. Around 30 children are registered. The principal is Mara Davis. The academic year starts in the end of August and ends the first week of June. Most children are of Basque background, but there are also non-Basque parents that take their children there attracted by the educational project and the exposure to a second language. Parents and children participate together in different activities. Besides school hours the Ikastola also has organized performances by clowns, fund raising activities such as Kilometroak (name of annual ikastola fundraiser held in the Basque Country), as well as the children's end of school year performance. The Ikastola enjoys an active support group.
