Donostia-San Sebastián. Is there a better present for an Euskaldun than to receive a Christmas card in Basque?  And if it comes from abroad, it will be especially appreciated.  In this EuskalKultura.eus article we provide our readers information on translators that can be used on computers, or smart phones for free and that can help you write mezuak euskaraz! (Messages in Basque).

Itzultzailea, Elhuyar's automatic translator, translates from Spanish, French and English into Basque and vice versa. It can be accessed from any browser or the app can be downloaded on your phone. The user interface is in Basque, French and Spanish.

Itzuli, is another possibility among automatic translators.  Languages included are Spanish, French, and English although the options that combine Basque-French and Basque-English are still in the Beta version.  Itzuli also can be accessed from a computer (with Spanish and Basque interfaces) or on whatever other device that allows you to download the app (with options to configure it in Basque, Spanish, English and French).

Another option is Batua, a translator that is also in Beta version and whose interface is completely in Euskera.  Batua doesn’t include an app however.

We can’t forget to include Google Translate, in the list that is also uses, as the aforementioned, NMT (Automatic Neuronal Translation) technology and that has recently improved the results substantially.

Among apps designed especially for cell phones, is Spanish-Basque Translator. This is available through a link on Google, and can also translate audio.

For those who end 2020 sending their best wishes in Basque, should enroll in Basque language and culture classes in 2021 taught at Basque clubs and universities all over the world.  Both options depend on the Etxepare Basque Institute, through its network of lectureships and the Euskara Munduan Program.  For more information click here Learn Basque.

(It is clear that translation tools are important aids, but they are not a cure-all, since nothing can replace a human when it comes to translating one language into another)
