Saladillo, Argentina. Since the beginning of the pandemic last March, the Itxaropen Basque Club in Saladillo has offered itself and has put its clubhouse at the disposition of authorities in the fight against COVID-19. EuskalKultura.eus reported on the activities that were carried out by the club to convert the clubhouse into a space for COVID-19 patients, installing beds and showers, avoiding the collapse of the Posadas Hospital. The Itxaropen Basque Club has “always” worked in total collaboration with local authorities on social action activities.

All of this took place as a precautionary measure since at that time there were not any COVID-19 cases in Saladillo, a situation that did change later.  At this time, and implementing the March forecasts, the Saladillo Government Secretary and those responsible or the Citizen Security and Civil Defense met with the commissioners and commanders of the security forces present in the city to attend to the need for places isolation of agents and police who work in environments of large virus exposure.

In view of the concerns presented by relatives and those living with members of the security forces who were not able to keep the pertinent security measures up in their homes, it was decided to designate the Itxaropen Basque Club’s facilities as an “isolation space” to be used used by those who work as prison guards at the Alvear Penitentiary and at the Cazon Base Camp for police officers, providing this option to these essential workers of the security forces who cannot comply with isolation measures at home.
