Despite the inclement weather and competition with the recently begun World Cup, a number of public and members and of the euskal etxea in Havana attended a talk on the reality of Euskera in Euskadi, and the world, by coordinator of HABE’s Euskara Munduan Jose Francisco “Kinku” Zinkunegi, on June 12th in the capital city. All this at a time when new steps are being taken towards implementing Basque classes on the island.

Havana, Cuba.  The announcement of the talk by Zinkunegi got a good response and confirmed the steps being taken by the Basque club, the historic Basque-Navarran Charity in Havana founded in 1877, to increase the cultural opportunities and services provided to its membership in this new phase of the entity under the leadership of Renato Garcia Eguzquiza.

“A great presentation with a lot of interesting information,” and “great work on the development in this area by the Basque Government through HABE and the Euskara Munduan program” were some of the comments heard from the 30 club members and guests, most of them interested in taking Euskera classes, as they stated.

“We started some classes in September of 2012.  Now, with this visit and HABE’s support and the preparation of a teacher, I’m sure that we will reinforce this important activity because the good attendance on such a horrible weather day, that also conflicted with the World Cup, clearly told us that there is also a strong interest in knowing and learning our mother tongue in Cuba,” club president told EuskalKultura.com.
