Celebrate Christmas in Basque with this list of Olentzero (Basque Santa) apps and Christmas cards

Christmas is a round the corner, and once again it’s time to celebrate the holidays and send our good wishes to family and friends.  For some time, new technology has made a mark in this field and have provided us a multitier of resources to wish happy holidays online with a Basque touch.  Following we provide you some of them. 

Donostia-San Sebastian.   A frequently requested resource this time of year is for online Christmas cards that can be sent easily, even at the last minute.  Here is a list that we put together every year (if you know of others, please let us know by emailing: info@euskalkultura.com and we will include it):

-Ikasbil: HABE’s site for Basque students provides a wide variety of cards, classified in categories such as: Maitasunezkoak (love), Zoriontzekoak (congratulations) and Gabonetakoak (Christmas).  Many cards are animated, and very funny, and all are in Basque. 

-Kukuxumusu: The Company in Navarre known all over the world for its modern and colorful images, provides a selection of cars especially designed for the holidays, but as always, with a touch of irreverent humor.  There are characters like the Olentzero, Mari Christmas, Merri Toro and many more. 

-www.manycomics.com: various themes like Christmas presents, twelve grapes, Zorionak…

-Postalak.com: a website with virtual cards in Basque of every type, among which there are various Christmas cards.  This is a good address to use all year.

-Pirritx eta Porrotx: The cards that drive the kids crazy.  On the clowns’ website, Pirritx eta Porrotx, there is a game “You’re the clown,” that allows photos to be uploaded to be personalized with wigs, mustaches and glasses like Pirritx, Porrotx or Marimotots.  You can also add whatever text you would like, print it, or send it via email.

-BiscayTIK The foundation supported by Bizkaia’s Provincial Government offers an original selectin of Christmas cards.  You just have to register at BizcayTIK in order to be able to send them.

-Zernola.net: Various types of cards, not necessarily related to Christmas but that can be used in the same way.

Christmas Apps.

Also, every year there are new apps and cards online in Basque or with Basque characters.

The website, Euskal Apps, for example has gathered some (as well as all kinds of other apps “Made in EH”):

-Nor da Olentzero? Interactive story about the Olentzero, allows you to record your voice. 

-Olentzero: an app for kids and adults who are anxiously awaiting the Olentzero’s visit to their homes..

-ZoriON: An app that allows you to create Christmas cards with characters like the Olentzero and Mari Domingi, Argitxo, Ttantto, Txirritx and Xango, trikitilaris... You can also use your own photos as background. For Android. 

-Gabon Kantak: Basque Christmas Carols.  Allows you to hear the songs and includes the lyrics to have them in hand with one click.  For Android. 

-Olentzeroren gutuna: Imagine your children’s faces when they get a letter from the Olentzero.  This app provides the possibility to write them and personalize them.  For Android.

-Olentzero: Another app to write to the famous coal maker.  For: iOS. 

-Olentzerori gutuna: Another letter to the Olentzero, where children can also sing.  For Android.
