Barcelona, Catalonia. Supported by the Iparra Hegoa Association in the Basque Country, the “Kutxa Gira…Kutxa Bira” initiative began its itinerary on March 20th in the Diaspora at the Carmen de Patagones y Viedma Aberri Etxea Basque Club that represents both cities. It was welcomed with Basque dance and locals as well as by the Mayors of both cities.  The kutxa (box) returned to the Basque Country on April 1st to continue its tour where at each stop it was opened and “Hitza da gure Lurra” (our word is our land), a poem by Bertsolari Amets Arzallus, was taken out and shared with the public while individuals put papers with their dreams and wishes in regards to Euskera and Euskal Herria on them inside.

This weekend the Kutxa will be in Catalonia.  It arrived on Thursday in Barcelona and was welcomed in the Gracia neighborhood at an event at the Raspall Plaza where there was no shortage of the local Ball de bot dance.  Today, Friday, it will visit the Sants neighborhood with the “ongi etorri” (welcome) at the community center.  Later, around 8pm, the Kilimak group from Hernani will perform a concert at the “La Deskomunal.” On Saturday, at the Pasaje del Born of the city’s old part, there will be children’s games beginning at 11am and at noon an event with Basque dance, glosses and bertsos.  Those gathered can put their dreams and message in the Kutxa at an event supported by the Omnium Cultural, CAL, the Sindicat d’habitatge del Casc Antic and the Sindicat de Manters.

The Kutxa will then leave Catalonia on Sunday.  At 12:30pm, Susana Panisello will present her book ETA’s Deported. The Conflict’s Forgotten, at the Anonima, center in the Clot camp de l”Arpa neighborhood.  There, at 2pm, there will be an aperitif to send the Kutxa from the Catalan lands.  Again, in Euskal Heria, it will continue its route that will conclude on May 30th in Segura (Gipuzkoa).  Its organizers have stressed the importance of the Diaspora and the participation of Basque clubs like that in Barcelona and Viedma y Patagones.  During these times when it is so difficult to travel and gather, a box can travel and make these gatherings possible among Basques as well as their messages and wishes.

Institutional recognition in Patagones (Argentina) thanks to the Aberri Etxea Basque Club
