Mueren en California Alvin y Anita (Dolagaray) Gomes, de la familia que regentó el hotel vasco Santa Fe, de Fresno

Fresno, California. Con una diferencia de apenas dieciséis días de diferencia ha muerto en la ciudad californiana de Madera el matrimonio compuesto por Anita (Dolagaray) Gomes, de 84 años, el 7 de mayo, y Alvin Gomes, el pasado 23 de mayo, a los 86. De ascendencia portuguesa de las islas Madeira él, Anita Celia Dolagaray nació en Fresno hija de Martin y Marcelina Dolagaray, conocida pareja vasca que regentó en un tiempo el Santa Fe, uno de los históricos hoteles vascos con que cuenta la ciudad y cuyo edificio está en función de ello registrado y protegido por la Dirección de Patrimonio federal norteamericana.

El matrimonio Gomes Dolagaray era socio del Centro Vasco de Fresno, en el que Anita había sido reconocida, además, como miembro honorario. El Hotel Santa Fe, ubicado en la avenida del mismo nombre, frente a la estación de ferrocarril de Fresno, constituyó una de las referencias vascas del valle de San Joaquín en los años en que la emigración desde Euskal Herria posibilitó la llegada de muchos euskaldunes a trabajar como pastores en la zona, procedentes en el caso de Fresno sobre todo de Navarra y la Baja Navarra.

Anita Celia Gomes

Anita Celia Gomes of Madera passed away on Monday, May 7, 2007 at her residence following a short illness. Surrounded by her loving family she peacefully slipped away into the arms of her beloved Saviour.

Born to Basque immigrants from Spain, Martin and Marcelina Dolagaray, Anita grew up and received her education in Fresno, graduating from Fresno Tech.. She along with her two sisters, Maria and Josephine, worked with their father at the Santa Fe Basque Restaurant and Hotel which he owned. Over the years, there have been several Basque families which operated the historic restaurant across from the Santa Fe Railroad Depot in downtown Fresno.

Anita met and married Alvin Gomes, a member of the prominent Gomes Dairy Farming family of the Kerman and Madera areas. Anita and Alvin would have been married 64 years on May 12th. They made their home in the LaVina district of Madera County for many years where their dairy and farming operations were located before their retirement.

Anita and Alvin were very supportive of the community. She is an Honorary Life Member of the Fresno Basque Club, an active member of St. Joachims Parish of Madera, A member of The Madera Golf and Country Club, a member of the Fresno County Cabrillo Club # 10, The C.P.D.E.S. of Fresno, and The Red Hats Society. In earlier years, Anita was involved in the California Dairy Princess Pageants.

In addition to her parents, Anita was preceded in death by an infant son, Frank Martin Gomes, and by a daughter Judy Crafton. She is survived by her devoted husband Alvin of Madera, her daughters, JoAnn and her husband Dr. Roger Rau and Joyce Gomes Spina and her husband Gary, and by son-in-law George Crafton all of Madera. Anita is the beloved sister of Maria Taylor and Josephine Sagouspe also of Madera. She is the grandmother of Stacey and her husband Joe Cates of Elk Grove, CA, Alyson Crafton of Fresno, and Bryan Crafton of Madera, Justin Rau and his wife Gina of Portland OR,and Cortney Olson and her husband Erik of Navoto and Erika and Chris Connors of El Dorado Hills, and Rikka Seibert of Portland and Ali Spina of Madera. She is the great grandmother of Judy, Cutter, Grace,Grant, Patrick, Marcelena, Ava and Declan.. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and extended family members.
