July 16th, 2016 Celebrate Parks Day at Red Bay!

10am - noon Join Parks Canada interpreters for guided walks and amazing views on the Boney Shore and Tracy Hill trails. 2:00pm – 5:30pm Sample Basque and Labrador food at the Parks Canada . Visitor Orientation Centre. 2:30pm – 4pm Parks Canada interpreters in 16th-century Basque attire treat you to stories from the heyday of whaling at Red Bay as you tour our amazing archaeological sites on Saddle Island. Weather

Temperate maritime climate. Weather patterns can change quickly. Be prepared for a variety of conditions. Bring sturdy footwear and warm, wind and waterproof clothing even in summer. Temperatures in Labrador are generally cooler than other areas of the province. During the summer days range from 15-20 °C, and nights from 10-15 °C.

Activities

Experience 16th century Basque whaling traditions, brought to life through costumed interpreters, original artifacts, scale models of work buildings, photographs and a 30-minute film. See original artifacts recovered from archaeological excavations. Get a close-up view of a 16th century chalupa. Discover tools and weapons used by the Basques, along with well-preserved personal items. Tour Saddle Island to see the archaeological remains of buildings where the Basques worked and lived 400 years ago.

Featured Activities, Echos from the past

Costumed interpreters share amazing tales of shipwrecks and adventure as you learn of the dramatic voyages from the Basque Country to Labrador in search of lucrative whale oil. Fortunes are won, and some Basque whalers won't survive the season.
