December 1, 1939 - April 7, 2021

Jeanine Iturbide died peacefully on April 7, 2021 at the age of 81.

She was born Jeanine Rose Mailh on December 1, 1939 in Ossès, France to Jean Mailh and Anne Jeanne Artiguebielle. Her father was a mechanic and her mother managed a small grocery store. Jeanine always had a sweet tooth and would sneak handfuls of candy from the grocery in her coat pocket to take to school to share with her friends. In addition to her love of good chocolate, this also illustrates the generous spirit that she carried with her in life.

After completing her primary education at the age of 14, Jeanine helped her father at their garage by pumping gas or putting air in patrons' tires. One customer in particular from a nearby village would eventually become her husband. She married Michel Iturbide in 1973 in Ossès and they moved to San Francisco, where they worked at a hotel restaurant.

In 1974 Jeanine and Michel, along with their infant son, moved to Los Banos when Michel bought the Woolgrowers restaurant. Jeanine did the accounting for the restaurant for the 42+ years until her retirement in 2016.

Throughout that time Jeanine was also a homemaker. She volunteered by pressing the altar linens for OLF Catholic School masses for the duration that her two children attended the school. Jeanine was generous with others and had a good sense of humor. She spent time gardening, cooking, being a sometimes feisty and always caretaking Amatchi to her two grandsons, and teasing Michel when playing cards.

Those who knew her know that Jeanine was always a hardworking woman. She didn't do anything slowly, but did manage to savor a few things in life: when dining out, she'd always order dessert.

Jeanine is survived by her husband of 48 years, Michel; children Christian and Daniele; grandchildren Zackary and Alec; older brother Henri Mailh who resides in St. Palais, France; and nieces, nephews and in-laws in the US and France.

Recitation of the Rosary will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Los Banos on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 10:00am, followed by Mass at 10:30am.
