Angeles & Joan Arrien Obituary

Angeles Marie Arrien "Angie" was born to Salvador Arrien and Marie Elordi Arrien in Glenns Ferry, Idaho on December 24, 1940, and passed away on April 24, 2014, in Petaluma, California.

Joan Arrien "Joanne" was born to Salvador Arrien and Marie Elordi Arrien in Buhl, Idaho on January 10, 1942, and died on February 7, 2022, in Petaluma, California.

The two sisters were raised in Twin Falls, Idaho. They attended St. Edward’s Catholic School and graduated from Twin Falls High School. Following graduation, they attended the University of Idaho.

After graduating from the University of Idaho, Angie moved to California where she taught school.  She continued her education at UC Berkley and other institutions in California and in Spain. She was a highly respected educator and a sought after speaker, giving lectures, seminars, and workshops on Cultural Anthropology throughout the United States and internationally. She was the author of several award-winning books on Cultural Anthropology and Folklore.

After graduating from college, Joanne joined Angie in California. Joanne worked for various firms in the California area. The sisters were very close and eventually settled together In Petaluma. Joanne assisted Angie with the editing and distribution of her books. Joanne was known for her artistic talents. She took care of the home front while Angie was away on her many trips. Their home was beautifully decorated, especially at Christmas. Joanne’s passion was gardening, which was shown in the beautiful landscaping around their home. Joanne grew an amazing flower garden raising magnificently large dahlias.

The sisters were first generation Basque and were very proud of their Basque heritage.

They were preceded in death by their parents and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Angie and Joanne were greatly loved and are missed by colleagues, many friends, and cousins.

memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 30, 2023, with a Rosary starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1701 Poplar St., Buhl.  A grave committal will immediately follow at Twin Falls Cemetery, 2350 4th Ave E., Twin Falls, Id. 83301.
