Aug. 1, 1936 - July 12, 2021

Paul Lizundia, a resident of Portland, Ore., died July 12, 2021 of kidney failure at the age of 84. He was raised in Burns, Ore., by tri-lingual Basque parents, Pauline and Joe Lizundia, and graduated from Burns High School in 1955 where he was student body president and on the golf team.

Paul did his active military service as an information specialist in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps Training Command and also served in the Oregon National Guard.

He attended the University of Oregon where he received a BS degree in 1962 and an MS degree in 1963. While putting himself through college, Paul had various, interesting jobs at the university: sports editor of the Oregana, managing editor of The Daily Emerald, night manager of the Erb Memorial Student Union, and assistant to the personnel director of the university. In 1962, he married Sydney Fox, whom he met at the university. They walked together in the graduation line, hand-in-hand, as husband and wife. Their only child, Bret, was born in 1965.

Paul's 30-year career was in personnel/labor management relations for the timber industry, food employers, and the newspaper industry. He was the manager of Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association which handled labor relations for daily newspapers in six northwest states. He also was the associate director of Food Employers, Inc., which handled labor relations for 120 member firms.

Paul participated on local school committees, volunteered at three libraries, and was on the board of directors of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Washington County.

He was a natural mechanic who loved to tinker; a good golfer; a graceful skier; an avid sports fan; a lover of classical music; a friendly neighbor; a caring community member; a devoted dad who attended every sporting and academic event in which his son participated; and a kind, helpful husband. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sydney; son, Bret, and his wife, Laura; granddaughters, Camilla and Erica; brother, Ray; and nieces, Maureen and Linda. He was preceded in death by his sister, Diana.

There will be a private family celebration at a later time. Remembrances in his name may be made to NAMI of Oregon or the Cedar Mill Library.
