Marie Jeanne Arrabit, beloved wife, sister, aunt, godmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 100 on August 25, 2025. Born in Osses, in the Basque Country, Marie Jeanne left her native France as a young woman to embark on a new life in America where she met her husband, Pierre. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home in the United States that would become a haven for generations of family, friends, and clergy.
Though she never had children of her own, Marie Jeanne was known lovingly as "Tanta" by her nieces and nephews and "Amatxi" by her many Godchildren.
Marie Jeanne is preceded in death by her beloved Pierre and her brothers Francois and Etienne Gachen. She is survived by her sisters Catherine Sainte-Marie and Germaine Bessonart, and many extended family members and lifelong friends who will carry forward her warmth, faith, and devotion to family.
Services will be held at Saint Monica's Church in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The viewing will begin at 9:30am followed by the Rosary, with a Funeral Mass at 11:00am. Following the Mass, a final blessing ceremony will be held in the chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery at 1:00pm in Colma.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Marie Jeanne's honor to Saint Monica's Church (https://smstaparishsf.org/) or The Northern California Chapter of The Alzheimer's Association (https://www.alz.org/norcal).
