(publicado en Kimak Funeral Home)

Daniel Louis Gastelu, Sr., a resident of Carlstadt for over 60 years, passed away on October 1, 2026 at the age of 94. Dan was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, compassionate son, loyal brother, caring uncle, and true friend to many. Predeceased by his beloved wife Joan Margaret (nee Walther), father Isidro, mother Rose and older brother Raymond he is survived by his three sons Daniel Jr., Christopher and Gary, his cherished grandchildren Alexander, Alyssa, Cosette, Hallie, Roman and Louis, great-granddaughter Anastasia, and his brothers Ronald and Gary.

A proud native of Hoboken, N.J., he graduated from Demarest High School where he starred as an All-Hudson County football player for the Red Wings. Prior to retiring he had a distinguished career as an award-winning Ford truck salesman, achieving the elite status of Grand Master, and was honored as recently as July 2025 by Ford Motors in a feature story in their on-line publication From the Road. Dan was especially proud of his Basque heritage and created an enduring bond between his paternal family in the province of Bizkaia in Spain and those in America following a trip to his father’s homeland in 1976.

A lifelong car and motorcycle enthusiast since purchasing his first car in 1949, a 1935 Ford costing $51, Dan had a passion for tinkering with his vehicles and was a biker into his eighties. In more relaxed moments, he reveled in holding court with his brothers over long lunches at the Nutley Diner and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Visitation will be at the Kimak Funeral Home, 425 Broad Street, Carlstadt on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 1-5 PM with a funeral service at 4:00 PM. Cremation will be private. Cremains will be interred in Berry Lawn Cemetery, Carlstadt on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at 1:00 PM.
