Brent was born in Bakersfield, California to William and Hazel Painter, and spent his younger years in Seaside, Oregon.

Brent retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service in Anacortes, Washington. He spent three tours in Vietnam and was involved in "Crossing the Line of Death" in the Gulf War. He served on the USS Independence, USS Missouri, USS Nimitz, USS Saratoga, as well as VAQ 131 Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Washington, and brought in the last seaplane to Whidbey.

Brent was the recipient of many service medals including the Gallantry Cross, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with three stars.

Working with Raytheon, he worked on the radar for various planes including the Stealth, Black Condor, Prowler and the Intruder.

Brent married Judy Carpenter on March 25, 1967. Together they had four children: Mike, Shawn, Kim and Brendy. Judy and Shawn preceded him in death. On February 8, 2012 he married Marie Colson. 

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Mt. Erie Ward; the Basque Club and the Samish Indian Nation, where he received an award in 1996 for his participation in getting them officially recognized. 

Brent was a loving and supportive husband and father who participated in various sporting activities including as a boxing coach for the Fidalgo Island Boxing Club.

Brent leaves behind his wife, Marie, his three children, Mike Painter, Kim Metz and spouse Mickey, and Brendy Martinez and her spouse Fernando; grandchildren Tyson, Kahlan and Brent Killian Metz; Skyler, Faith and Shawn Martinez, and Emily Painter; great-granddaughter Paisley Bohn; sisters Lana Lannigan, Seaside, OR and Deanne Chisum, Warrenton, OR; step-daughter Shelley Davis; cousin and life-long friend Mark Jones, Anderson, IN; Ron Thompson, fishing buddy and best friend, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Urn committal with US Navy Military Honors will be held at Fernhill Cemetery at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2016 followed by a Memorial Service at the LDS Ward Anacortes at Noon, officiated by Bishop Jason Hogge.

Arrangements are in the care of Evans Chapel & Crematory Inc., of Anacortes, WA & the San Juan Islands.
