Donostia-San Sebastián. Created by Pello Jauregi, the methodology “Uler-saioak” includes strategies for those who don’t understand Basque to achieve a minimal level of comprehension.  The work completed published by the Cluster of Sociolinguists can be found here and is available for instructors and can be shared thanks to its free license.  We read the article in Argia and summarized it here.

The goal of “Uler-saioak” is not only for individuals to acquire the ability to understand Basque in the shortest possible time, "And thus be able to enter into relationships in Basque on the street and in natural settings, at least in the bilingual interview format."

The methodology “Uler-saioak,” includes a process of 60 hours allowing users to achieve a comprehension level of A1.  The book by Jauregi explains the daily program that includes a series of methodological advice to support the pedagogic activity.  The methodology was conceived to be developed by a professor in the classroom so that this professor or “trebatzaile" provides the students a large number of “input” that they can understand in Euskera.

The trainer or instructor, using simple Basque, thus channels communication activities and continuously checks what is understood by the recipients. The methodology does not directly develop the ability to speak in Basque. It does not ask individuals to express themselves in Basque. Understanding is the only focus, and therefore it is up to individuals to continually check what they have understood from the teacher.
