Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina. The oldest Basque club in Patagonia, the Euskal Etxea in Comodoro Rivadavia turns 97 today.  The quarantine has obliged cancelling all of the club’s face-to-face activities like choir, dance, sports, but club members didn’t want the anniversary to pass without celebrating it and so have created a varied chronogram of activities online for the entire community.

The festivities begin today Wednesday at 7:30pm with an online Zoom meeting that will include the board of directors, members and friends and anyone wishing to join in.  So that all the club’s groups and activities are represented, they will share videos of the choir at Semana Nacional Vasca in Bahia Blanca 2019; as well as the various dance groups, txikis, intermediates and Haize Dantzariak.  This will be followed by an address from Hector Baztan, club president, and a toast.  Each will toast with their beverage of choice.

On Friday, people will be able to send all the works and drawings created for the anniversary via email, shared on the Euskal Etxea’s social media.  On Saturday there will be a special radio show from 11:30-1:00pm (that can be followed here romeriavascacr.radio12345.com), that will include Basque music as well as greetings and messages received; as well as anecdotes.  If you would like to send a message, limited to 3 minutes please, you can send it via WhatsApp +54 9 297 460 2253 or by email vascoscr@yahoo.com.ar. For those who can’t listen to the program, it will be rebroadcast on Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a special activity for the youngest coordinated by Maite Baztan and Wanda Bazan.  At 4pm txikis are invited to a meeting again on Zoom to get see each other, at least virtually after so much time apart, to share some time together.

As in any authentic Basque celebration, good food has to be a part, and so that is why they have organized “sukalki,” an exquisite typical dish that will be prepared next Sunday, May 31st to sell at the clubhouse following appropriate protocols.

EuskalKultura.eus joins in congratulating the club on its 79th anniversary, Zorionak! Here’s to many many more. Urte askoan, aniz urtez!
