Asunción, Paraguay. The Basque club in the Paraguayan capital announced an important Basque cultural and festival day for the last day of the month of July. It will begin with a talk by historian Eduardo Nakayama entitled, “The Presence of Basques in Paraguay,” followed by dinner with typical dishes and a menu that includes cod, Bizkaian chickpeas and black beans. The evening will include entertainment by dantzaris directed by Ninive Orrego. The event begins at 7:30 pm at the center.
The club’s secretary also informed us that a delegation from the club led by Jose Maria Vargas Peña Apezteguia, participated in a tribute to Sebastián Sasiain Zubillaga at the end of June in San Juan Bautista in the department of Misiones. Club representatives carried an Ikurriña with other Basque symbols in the parade.
Remember that Sebastián Sasiain Zubillaga was born in Leintz-Gatzaga, Gipuzkoa and came to Paraguay in 1926 at the age of 26, to settle in San Juan Bautista. He left his mark, among other things, for being the creator of the dish called “Batiburrillo,” that for years has been part of the traditional local gastronomy, along with the drink known as “Siriki’.
