San Francisco: Cultural Day on the Basque contribution to the history of California this Saturday at the Basque Cultural Center

San Francisco, CA. We have been announcing this event for a couple of weeks on our agenda, but with it being only two days away, it worths to mention it again.  The Basque Cultural Center in San Francisco will be the site this Saturday for a gathering of Basques and fans of Basque culture for the “Basque Cultural Day,” an informative event held every two years organized by the BEO (Basque Educational Organization), with a day full of presentations on the Basque history of California, complete with dance performances and dinner.

Beginning at 1pm, various experts will present on various aspects of the Basque history of California.  At 6pm attendees will move to the aperitif, followed by dinner where the local Zazpiak Bat Basque Dancers will perform. The presentations are free, but cost of the dinner is $50 for adults and $15 for children under the age of 12.  Proceeds will support the BEO’s activities.  Tickets may be purchased, here.

Following is the complete program:

  • 1pm Early Basque Presence in Southern California by Marianna Etcheverria, Jeanette Bidart and Mitch Gariador.
  • 2pm The Long Walk: Sheep Transhumance from Kern County to the High Sierra by Steven Gamboa, Steve Bass and Janet Barreneche.
  • 3:15pm Early Basque Presence in North California by Nancy Zubiri.
  • 4:15pm The Greatest Generation: Bay Area Basques in WWII by Pedro Oiarzabal
  • 6pm Aperitif
  • 7pm Dinner and dance performance by the local Zazpiak Bat Dancers
