Rome, Italy. The Vatican announced yesterday that Pope Francis has named Celestino Aos Braco (Artaitz, Navarre, 1945) as the next Cardinal of Chile.  To date he has served as the Archbishop of Santiago and will become a Cardinal on November 28th at an event at the Vatican.  Celestino Aos is a Capuchin and graduated in psychology.  He was ordained a priest in 1968, by the Bishops of Pingliang, Ignacio Larrañaga.  Sent by his order to Chile in 1983. Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Copiapó in 2014, and Archbishop of Santiago in 2019.

The Vatican also announced the appointment of another 12 Cardinals.  Among these are Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel (Chiltepec, Estado de México, 1940), Bishop Emeritus of San Cristobal de las Casas, who has done notable work in favor of indigenous peoples consolidating indigenous theology and pastoral care, especially in the Tseltal and Tsotil languages. Last June, Arizmendi, that some call ‘The Bishop of the Pachamama,” was slightly wounded by a gunshot in a crossfire in the State of Mexico.
