Donostia-San Sebastián. It is clear that there is not a perfect machine translator for Basque, or any other language, and nothing will substitute, at least for now, work done by a human being. Automatic translators could help in translations from and to Basque, but none available currently reached the same level as those for other surrounding languages. Now, however, despite the inevitable margin of automatic translation errors, the new automatic translator made available online by the Basque Government brings along with it a high degree of quality and we much congratulate those behind if on this achievement.
The new “neuronal automatic translator,” based on artificial intelligence has used the experience and translation memories compiled for twenty years by the public institute EAEE-IVAP. Currently, the beta version is available for citizens to test and for the translator itself to “practice.” In a few months, the final version will be uploaded. In any case, we have tried it and it provides very high quality translations.
As others, this Euskera translator translates texts up to 4,000 characters at a time. At the moment it is available for Euskera-Spanish, and Spanish-Euskera translations however we are sure that it will soon include other languages.
