A connection between Bizkaia and California, the red and white. The admiration for the values, the defense and pride of the game with players from the homeland. Fifteen members of the Athletic Peña headquartered in San Francisco attended the game in San Mames on Saturday to watch the game against Barça live. They continued their journey yesterday that will run through November 3rd with a meal at the Baserri Maitea in Forua, run by Zaldua, exporter of the Bilbao club. The Barcelona Town Hall has imposed a fine of 3,300 Euros on Barcelona’s Euskal Etxea, organizer of Euskal Herria Sona. This unexpected expense has put a serious hole in the EH Sona accounts and has also seriously disrupted the finances of the entire entity. In hopes of raising money to face this problem, the Basque club has launched an internet campaign that concludes in three days. To date 70% of the necessary funds have been raised, so this is the last push. Help them out with your grain of sand. Any and all donations are welcome.

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu will begin his official agenda on his trip to Quebec and Canada. He will begin in Montreal with a visit to the Center for the Prevention and Radicalization of Violence, followed by an afternoon conference at the Council of International Relations in Montreal, and a visit with the Basque company Orbinox. He will also attend a reception at 6pm with the local Basque community and representatives of the Euskaldunak Quebec Basque Association.

After its presentation at the Donostia Film Festival, the documentary will be shown this Monday in Boise and San Francisco at their respective Basque clubs. In Argentina, the film will debut on Saturday, November 11th in San Nicolas at the main day of Semana Vasca. The film is being presented there by angel Oiarbide from Gure Esku Dago during the event entitled, “People, Towns, Rights,” to later begin its tour of various Basque clubs across the country as part of the Traveling Basque Film initiative.

The musician and researcher from Donostia will present his latest CD Xuxurlak that includes 25 piano pieces. Okiñena will begin his tour this Saturday and Sunday in Buenos Aires at the Maimonides University and at the Usina del Arte respectively, on a tour that will take him to San Miguel de Tucuman, San Juan, Punta del Este in Uruguay and North American cities like Reno, Miami and Chicago among other stops. And not by coincidence. In fact, members of the club in Trenque Lauquen, contacted the Basque artist who lives in Les Landes and who had already announced that he would be at Semana Vasca in San Nicolas because he had been chosen to be the official painter of the Ham Festival in Baiona in 2016. Besides sharing dinner with members and friends, of Euskal Sustraiak, Etxebarria also exhibited some of his works in the local museum.

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country (BOPV-EHAA) included in the edition published on Wednesday October 25th information on 2017 grants for Basques in extreme need living in Basque communities abroad. These grants, that were approved by the Government’s council yesterday, has a budget of 202,000 Euros. Applications are presented through Basque clubs and the deadline to apply is November 25.

Euskal Herria Sona (EHS), is the annual showcase of Basque music in Barcelona that celebrates its 20th edition this year. Organized by the local Euskal Etxea it will begin on Thursday the 26 with a concert by Korrontzi at the Artesà Tradicionàrius Center (CAT) in Gracia and will run through December 1st when the veteran rock group Zea Mays will perform at the Sidecar. Between these dates, a dozen performances of all styles will take place at various venues in Barcelona.

Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu will begin his official visit to Quebec in Montreal next Monday, on an institutional, economic, and cultural initiative. The Lehendakari will travel to Montreal, Quebec, and will also go to Ottawa, on a trip that will strengthen political, historical and cultural ties. The delegation from the Basque Government will hold meetings with authorities and institutions in Quebec, with the business, academic and cultural world, as well as with the local Basque community.

The most serious onslaught of Hurricane Irma left Caribean areas devastated and in need of serious repairs that will take some time. We don’t have news that members of the Basque community were particularly affected, although we continue to receive images on the sports facilities like the frontons in Ciego de Avila, where the National Martyrs of Bolivia Cup is held and that it has been severely damaged.
